Community invited to help paint new mural at South Seattle College

South Seattle College is opening its doors to the community for a special mural painting day on Saturday, May 17. Art faculty and students are inviting volunteers to help transform a breezeway on the main campus with a vibrant new design.

The college, located in the Puget Ridge neighborhood of West Seattle, is excited to bring this community project to life. The mural's design was created by Indigenous Pacific Islander Artist Toka Valu, who drew inspiration from artwork and stories gathered during workshops with SSC students, faculty, and staff. Valu collaborated with Sasha taqʷšəblu LaPointe (Upper Skagit and Nooksack) on the design. The artwork incorporates creation stories, reflects on the Land that South Seattle College occupies, and includes the yəhaw̓ story. Key themes central to the design are community care, community collaboration, and the importance of carrying knowledge into our lives.

Delridge Farmers Market Opening Day is May 24

Dozens of vendors offering products from around the world are featured

The Opening Day Ceremony of the 5th Annual Delridge Farmers Market is set for Saturday, May 24 at 10am. The market is produced by the African Community Housing & Development (ACHD).

It's located at 9421 18th Ave SW in the Delridge neighborhood.

The Delridge Farmers market is about centering culture, and cultivating community. The market model prioritizes BIPOC [Black, Indigenous, Person of Color] farmers, chefs, and artisans who reflect and honor the cultural diversity of Southwest Seattle. At the market, visitors can find unique food and goods representing nations from across the globe, alongside traditional farmers market staples like local produce and flowers. It aims to be a one-stop shop focused on holistic community care. A key feature is that the market takes no fees or a cut of sales from vendors - everyone keeps 100% of their revenue.

Highland Park residents can help choose walkway and sidewalk locations

Tour set for May 21 at Highland Park Elementary

The Seattle Transportation Levy is working to create safer ways for people to move through their communities. A significant portion of streets in Seattle currently lack sidewalks. The levy helps fund new sidewalks, alongside school zone speed camera funds and potential state or federal grants. The ambitious goal of the levy is to build 350 blocks of sidewalks over eight years, with 250 completed in the first four.

For the Highland Park neighborhood specifically, there's a plan to build at least 10 blocks of new sidewalk or walkway thanks to the Seattle Transportation Levy. By 2029, approximately 15 blocks of new sidewalk or neighborhood walkway are planned for the area. To figure out the best places for these improvements, the community's input is crucial. Neighborhood walkways, which can be quick-build using paint, asphalt, and barriers, are often placed on local streets with less traffic but can also be temporary on busier streets.

SAKA: Safety meeting in Highpoint May 14 will address gun violence

District 1 Seattle City Councilmember Rob Saka shared the announcement of a Safety Meeting he's hosting at the Highpoint Neighborhood House on May 14.

"The recent surge in gun violence across North Delridge, Snake Hill, and High Point is totally unacceptable. Residents are living in a heightened state of fear — and I want to be clear: this is not the status quo we will accept.

I have been working closely with our Executive Departments, the Mayor’s Office, and community partners to develop comprehensive, long-term strategies to address this crisis — some of which I described in more fulsome detail in last week’s newsletter. But addressing violence at its roots requires all of us — especially the voices of those most impacted.

That’s why I am sponsoring a Community Safety Meeting focusing specifically on the concerns facing the North Delridge, Snake Hill, and High Point neighborhoods.

Got a broken appliance? "Fix it" event set for May 17 at White Center Fieldhouse

At this free community repair event at the White Center Fieldhouse (aka the "Log Cabin") in King County's Steve Cox Memorial Park, our skilled volunteer "fixers" will try to repair and mend household items and clothing!

First-come, first-served (for people's first items only), as fixers are available. If people bring second items, we'll try to get to those after we've worked on everyone's first items.

If you have questions about the item you plan to bring, or any other questions, contact event coordinator Tom at tom.watson@kingcounty.gov or at 206-477-4481, or by commenting on this Facebook event page. First, read below, or visit www.KingCounty.gov/ecoconsumer (which also lists King County businesses offering paid repair) for more info on this program.
