City debates tax on paper, plastic bags

Paper or plastic? Beginning in January either choice could cost you.

The City Council's committee decision on a proposal to tax all disposable shopping bags is scheduled for July 22. If approved by the committee and later by the full council, Seattle consumers would be charged a 20-cent "green fee" on each paper or plastic shopping bag they use in grocery, drug and convenience stores.

The proposed legislation, expected to take effect on Jan.

Kudos to businesses

Have you ever heard the adage of three times I did good, I heard nothing; one time I did bad...well you can finish the rest.

The last two letters I wrote came with a negative chip on my shoulder. I received a positive response about not wanting the traffic control lights, which are nothing more than easy cash to spend for the city.

I would assume the extra revenue would be spent as easily as an undisciplined child with a $200 extra cash he did not earn.

Excuse my attitude but I am using current spending habits of all government groups as a reference.

County exec wants transit fare hike to go in effect on Oct. 1

With bus ridership and diesel fuel prices at record levels, King County Executive Ron Sims is proposing a 25-cent fare increase.

Sims said he decided on the increase rather than cut service to pay for fuel costs that have skyrocketed over 60 percent this year alone.

"This worldwide fuel crisis comes at a time of historic ridership growth for Metro Transit - and is the reason why residents are turning to transit in record numbers as their own budgets are squeezed," Sims said.
