Some routine stops provided big returns for officers this past week. People stopped for drinking in public, jaywalking, and sleeping in a vehicle turned out to be wanted on outstanding warrants for drug dealing, carrying concealed weapons, felony escape and trespassing. All of the suspects were booked into jail.
Officers investigating a hit and run incident discovered that the suspect driver was wanted on a $50,000 2nd-degree child-rape warrant. The man had fled the scene but was later found by a K9 unit. He was booked into King County Jail.
As he fished from the Lincoln Park beach near Colman Pool, an elderly man was approached by a white male in his 40s or 50s who demanded to see his fishing license. When the gentleman brought out his wallet, the stranger grabbed it, pulled out the cash, and threw the wallet into the water. He then grabbed the gentleman's glasses and fishing pole and threw them into the water before walking away toward the ferry dock.
In the 9000 block of 16th SW, unknown persons set a fire that burned a portable toilet to the ground. And in the 7900 block of 12th, a bicycle and garbage can were destroyed by a suspicious fire.
A citizen called 911 to report a group of males and females damaging cars near 12th and Cloverdale. Though some suspects were interviewed, they were released from the scene. A total of five cars were damaged.
On Denver Ave. S, a man knocked on a door and claimed to be there to collect money for the electric bill. When the resident said he had already paid, the man forced his way in, wrestled the victim to the floor, and stole his wallet. The suspect, a white male in his 50s or 60s, drove westbound on Lucille St. in a white van with an open bed.
A wall at Highland Park Elementary School was defaced with graffiti-some of it expressing anti-police statements and one mentioning a teacher by name. Damages are estimated at $500.
Sunday afternoon, an alert off-duty officer saw three boys, ages 12 and 13, scrawling graffiti in an Admiral-area alley. The boys were taken to the Southwest Precinct, interviewed, and released to their parents. Officers also confiscated three markers, five cans of spray paint, and shoe polish.
At the 7-11 at 35th and Avalon, several people called 911 to report that a man was attacking a cab driver, punching him and chasing him around the parking lot. The suspect was intoxicated and claimed that the driver wouldn't take him to work. The driver countered that the man didn't know where he was going, couldn't provide directions, and didn't have enough money to cover the fare. The suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault and property damage.
At 35th and Henderson, two teens approached another to ask the time. They then asked to "check out" his skateboard. The young man handed it to them. The suspects walked away with it and never returned.
Thursday, in the 8800 block of Delridge, unknown persons in a passing car shot a bicyclist with BB pellets. According to doctors at Harborview, two of the pellets penetrated the victim's skin and lodged in his abdominal cavity.
Paging Alfred Hitchcock: A man was helping his grandfather with some remodeling work when he entered an apartment and stumbled across a dead body seated in a recliner in front of a turned-on television. The medical examiner claimed the remains of the victim, who, it was apparent, had been dead for several days.
