A mother and son in South Park are dismayed at their loss of income: They had their daughter/sister smuggled across the border in order to join her husband here in Seattle. In return, the husband was to pay a fee to the family. Though the husband has been making payments, the mother and son have refused to let the young woman leave their apartment until the fee is paid in full. On Tuesday, they threatened to kill the husband if the wife left with him. Officers explained to the family that they cannot hold the young woman against her will, and they stood by as she removed her belongings from the apartment. Officers placed into evidence the “promissory note/receipt” showing how much the husband owes. Meanwhile, mother and son were primarily interested in knowing what the officers were going to do about the outstanding debt.
A West Seattle resident convicted of five DUI's in the past nine years led officers on a four-minute chase through Genesee Hill and the Admiral area early Friday, finally pulling over at 40th and Hinds. Ordered from the vehicle with hands up and told to go to his knees, the man was so unsteady that he had to hold onto the car to comply. At the Southwest Precinct he refused to take a breath test (upon the advice of his attorney). The 48-year-old (already driving with a suspended license) was booked into the King County for investigation of DUI, traffic charges, and for felony flight/eluding. (One supposes he didn't get to go to rehab, as he was supposed to on Monday.)
Early Tuesday, a burglar alarm went off in a house in the 9000 block of 18th Southwest. The homeowner looked out his window and saw a suspicious person in the alley. The suspect told officers he was walking home from the store and didn't try to enter the home. He was booked into King County Jail anyway when an ID check showed that he was wanted on two King County warrants--one for unlawful bus conduct and another for assault—with a total bail amount of $18,000.
A call about a two-year-olds playing in a South Park alley resulted in four children being taken into custody by Child Protective Services. Their house was loaded with rotting food and diapers, and officers found a toddler alone in a bedroom with an electrical cord around his neck. Mom had gone to the store for cigarettes. She ended up being taken to Harborview for treatment after making suicide threats.
After shoplifting about $15 worth of deli items from the Alaska Junction Safeway, a man was confronted by witnesses. He ran off and jumped over a fence, managing to drop not only most of the stolen items, but his car keys as well. Officers were able to match the keys to a car in the parking lot, and store security had the suspect's vehicle towed away.
