Rape Suspect Followed Women From Buses
Police say there may be more victims of a man charged with beating and raping three women in Des Moines. Jazer Salogo, 18, is in custody, charged with rape and robbery in connection with the attacks in November 2008, and March and July of this year. In each case, Salogo is believed to have followed his victims off the No. 174 Metro bus, then attacked them in a wooded area along Pacific Highway South, police said. Salogo was arrested on July 23, after a Des Moines police officer saw a rape happening in a wooded area near Pacific Highway. The woman told police Salogo was staring at her on the bus and when she walked off, he beat her, robbed her and dragged her into the woods. Salogo fled when he was spotted by the police officer, but a police dog was able to track him down. Salogo's DNA was later linked to other rapes and a robbery, police said. "We believe that his primary motive initially is robbery and the rape comes afterwards," said Sgt. Doug Jenkins of the Des Moines Police Department. Police said Salogo also targeted specific women. "This individual seems to like dark-skinned women, Asian. Those seem to have been primarily his victims," Jenkins said. Detectives said many rapes and assaults go unreported and they believe there could be women out there who recognize Salogo, but are keeping a secret. "We don't know his travels yet, but we need people to take a look at this and see if they recognize him, if they know of anybody that might've been victimized by him," Jenkins said. Officers ask anyone who may be a victim of his to call Des Moines Police.
