On Tuesday, October 28th, the dedicated crew at the West Seattle Engine 32 station, located at 3715 SW Alaska St, received a special delivery of lunch, courtesy of Jack’s BBQ. This generous gesture was performed in honor of First Responder Appreciation Day, recognizing the essential role the firefighters and paramedics play in the community.
The effort was organized by Brian Anderson, the executive director at Quail Park, West Seattle. Anderson explained that the purpose of the annual delivery is to show profound appreciation to Engine 32, noting that they are the first responders for any and all medical emergencies affecting the community. He emphasized that the crew does "a lot for not only us, but the community as a whole".
This year marked the second consecutive year that Quail Park has organized the appreciation lunch. They chose Jack's BBQ for the delivery, understanding that "Firemen like barbecues". Anderson also ensured that the community was directly involved, bringing several Quail Park residents who volunteered and were excited to participate in the delivery.
A Meaningful Recognition
While receiving thanks is not the primary motivation for their demanding job, the responders acknowledged the importance of the gesture. Mike Duncan, one of the paramedics at the station, shared that it is nice to see the community value what they do in trying to take care of the public and keep the community safe.
The responders stressed that they "don't come to work for thank yous" and "don't do the job for thank yous," noting that appreciation is "not what we're here for".
