The music has officially returned to the West Seattle Junction. On March 7th, 2026, School of Rock West Seattle (SORWS) hosted a grand re-opening celebration from noon to 3 pm, marking the end of a long silence that began in October 2025. The facility, located at 4701 41st Ave SW, was forced to undergo a complete rebuild following a devastating water leak from the CVS pharmacy located directly above it. Ironically, just prior to the reopening a new leak was found but it was quickly resolved.

For Director of Operations Philip Gustavson, the reopening is more than just a return to business; it is a continuation of a life-long mission. “Music is essential for humans,” Gustavson said. “I mean, going back... it's a way that they told stories and passed on information around the campfire. So, it's in our DNA”.
Gustavson’s journey with music education started long before the West Seattle location. “When I was in high school, I used to rent out the Hoedown Center in the Tri Cities and throw all ages music concerts... it was just a way to get kids involved with music,” he recalled. After successfully helping to grow the School of Rock in Lake City, he had the opportunity to open the West Seattle branch. Despite modern upgrades to IT systems and branding, Gustavson insists the core remains unchanged: “We're still doing the same thing in the rehearsal room that we were doing back in that house on Lake City Way. And it just works. The kids develop a lot of confidence. They're having a ton of fun”.

The school’s curriculum is built on a "song first" approach, designed to keep students engaged by teaching them popular rock songs before transitioning into deep theory and scales. Programs cater to all ages, including:
- Little Wing (Ages 4-5) & Rookies (Ages 6-7): Early childhood programs focused on building a foundation.
- Rock 101 (Ages 8-13): A premier program for beginners that combines a weekly private lesson with a group rehearsal.
- Performance Program (Ages 8-18): The school's flagship program that culminates in students performing at local Seattle music venues.
- Adult Program (18+): Designed for adults who want to learn an instrument and eventually take the stage.

In addition to traditional instruments like guitar, bass, drums, vocals, and keyboards, the school is adapting to the digital age. Gustavson noted that they offer workshops and summer camps on production using digital audio workstations like Logic, where students learn how to mic a band and mix audio. Even as AI begins to enter the production world, Gustavson remains focused on the human element. “I would say that the number one thing we do here is build community and relationships, self-confidence,” he explained. “Regardless of the tools... it's always been musicians coming together, making music together, and that's what we're all about”.

The re-opening event featured live music from the school’s house band, tours of the pristine new facility, and a drawing for a Boss overdrive guitar effect pedal. For many, the return of the school means the return of a vital community hub. “Having a space for them to come belong, play music, develop their skills, come as they are, but, you know, have the ability to get really good if they want to—it's really important work for me and it's been my my whole life's work basically,” Gustavson said.
