Residents of South Delridge are demanding immediate government intervention following a violent shooting at a long-standing encampment that has left a man fighting for his life. The incident, which occurred on April 28, 2026, has sparked a community-led petition calling for the City of Seattle and King County to address what neighbors describe as a "life-threatening" public safety crisis.

A Violent Escalation

According to reports, a man in his early 30s was shot in the back inside a tent located near the 9200 block of 17th Ave SW. The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition following a major law enforcement response and perimeter lockdown. Neighbors state this violence is the culmination of months of deteriorating conditions at the site, which sits on vacant public property managed by the City of Seattle, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and King County.

Community Under Siege

For months, residents living adjacent to the site have reported a "sustained and escalating pattern" of illegal activity. These reports include:

• Open drug dealing and use occurring in plain sight.
• Frequent altercations, fighting, and loud disturbances at all hours.
• The suspected fencing of stolen property and constant traffic of unidentified vehicles.

The situation is particularly dire for families in nearby apartments. Children regularly play in an alley directly across from the encampment, exposing them to unpredictable behavior and active drug transactions. One neighbor noted that despite repeated "Find It, Fix It" reports and calls to the police, there has been "little to no effective action" taken to resolve the situation.

Demands for Accountability

A petition launched on April 29 has quickly gained over 50 signatures, calling on Mayor Katie Wilson and the Seattle City Council to act. Petitioners are demanding the immediate clearing and securing of the property, paired with coordinated outreach to provide vulnerable inhabitants with access to shelter and services.

"No one should be living in conditions like this," the petition states, noting that the current approach is failing both the unhoused individuals and the surrounding neighborhood. Residents are also calling for a transparent interagency accountability plan to ensure the site does not immediately return to its current state after being cleared.

As of today, community members report that no visible action has been taken to secure or barricade the site following the shooting. "A shooting has already occurred, and a life is hanging in the balance," the petition warns. "Failure to act now places everyone... at continued risk"
