West Seattle Summer Fest kicks off 44th year with historic sustainability push
Thu, 07/09/2026
The Junction is coming alive this weekend as the 44th annual West Seattle Summer Fest officially begins, promising a weekend filled with music, food, and community spirit. While the main festival runs Friday through Sunday, the celebration starts early with Summer Fest Eve on Thursday night, July 9, where local streets will be transformed into exclusive outdoor lounges with special menus. For the most up-to-date information, residents and visitors can check the official festival website.
A Pioneering Green Initiative
This year's event marks a significant environmental milestone, as it is the only major festival in Seattle to go completely reusable. In a partnership with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and Bold Reuse, the festival is replacing disposable items with sustainable and reusable drinkware and dishware. SPU is also sponsoring water stations throughout the grounds to keep attendees hydrated. Organizers hope this initiative will turn dozens of pounds of waste into recyclable materials and set a green example for other Seattle neighborhoods. To participate, attendees simply need to drop off their used items at bins marked “Return reuse items here”.
Music and Expanded Stages
The festival’s soundtrack features a blend of established icons and emerging local talent. Festivities began Thursday night with an "iconic show" by The Head and the Heart at Easy Street Records, followed by Seattle’s own Aurora Ave. performing at the all-ways intersection.
For the first time in its history, the festival is expanding its footprint further north on California Street and onto SW Oregon Street. This expansion includes a new secondary stage called "The Big Dark Corner," hosted by West Seattle’s Big Dark Records. Located behind Key Bank, this stage will feature local, youthful, and experimental artists throughout the weekend during non-business hours.
