The former Alki Elementary School building may have undergone demolition, but its historic commemorative outdoor walkways aren't disappearing into the history books (at least not entirely).

When the former campus came down, local alumni immediately leaped into action. Principal Mason and Construction Project Lead Brian Fabella found themselves answering a wave of inquiries from eager former students asking a crucial question: What happened to our engraved brick pavers?

The answer is a happy one! Although some of the pavers unfortunately could not be salvaged during the demolition process, the ones that survived have been carefully saved and given a thorough cleaning by the contractor. Now, they are ready to be reunited with the community.

Starting this Wednesday, community members can head down to the corner of 59th Avenue SW and Stevens Street. The cleaned, engraved bricks are currently waiting along the construction fence near the sidewalk, right next to the new playground installation.

But don't wait too long or show up in the middle of the night. If you want to claim a piece of Alki history, you'll need to drop by during the official pickup windows:

• This week: Wednesday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
• Next week: Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Outside of these specific hours, these precious pieces of the past will be locked up tight and secured behind the construction fencing. Be sure to swing by on time to grab your brick and take a walk down memory lane.
