Two Rescued From Sinking Boat
Two people were rescued from a sinking boat in Des Moines. A representative for the Des Moines Police Department stated two people and their dog were rescued from the boat that was about 150 yards off the Redondo Pier.
A South King County Fire representative said a swimmer made it out to the father and son with flotation devices. A marine unit was then able to pluck the two out of the water and bring them safely to shore.
After being examined by aid units and warmed up, both individuals went home without injuries. The dog appeared to be ok, too.
Girlfriend Shoots Boyfriend, Standoff follows
A 41 year-old woman shot her 55 year-old boyfriend at least twice with a handgun, October 1st.
He was taken to Harborview Hospital with non life- threatening injuries. The incident occurred about 10:30 PM in the 800 block of SW 117th in unincorporated King County, just to the north of Burien.
The pair live with the man’s brother and the woman’s 15 year-old son, both of whom were home at the time of the shooting.
The son called 9-1-1 and everyone except the suspect made their way out of the house as deputies arrived. The woman refused to come out of the house or communicate with deputies.
Eventually the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team entered the residence and took the woman into custody just before 2:00 AM. No one was injured. The suspect was booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault 1st Degree.
A small caliber handgun was recovered inside the house.
Deputy Accused Of Beating Teen Is Fired
The King County Sheriff’s Deputy accused of assaulting a teen girl in a holding cell has been fired. Deputy Paul Schene, who was charged with misdemeanor assault after the incident, was facing termination over a number of policy violations.
Schene, an eight year department veteran, is accused of kicking Malika Calhoun in the abdomen, punching her and pulling her hair in a SeaTac City Hall holding cell after her arrest for investigation of car theft.
The U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing video surveillance tape to determine if Calhoun’s civil rights were violated. Calhoun sued the county and the case was settled in April, with the county paying a trust in the girl’s name $125,000, according to the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
After an internal investigation, Schene’s precinct commander sustained several allegations against the deputy. Schene also appeared before Sheriff Sue Rahr with his attorney to give his side of the story.
She sustained the following allegations against Schene: Making false or fraudulent statement or inducing others to do so. Conduct that is criminal in nature. Excessive or unnecessary use of force.
Acts in violation of Sheriff's Office policies, directives, or rules. Discrimination, incivility, or bigotry.
Woman Charged With Raping Teen Boy
King County prosecutors have filed child rape charges against a Des Moines woman accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy.
In court documents, prosecutors allege that Mallory Lynn Rafferty, 21, was caught sleeping with the youth in July by a family friend.
Questioned by officers, the boy told detectives he had been sexually active with Rafferty for months prior to a July 29 report to Child Protective Services.
Rafferty was arrested days later after police spoke with the boy. According to police, Rafferty initially denied having sexual contact with the boy.
She allegedly told investigators that she and the youth had been watching pornography together, not having sex.
Confronted with the victim's statement, Rafferty allegedly admitted to touching the boy inappropriately but denied having sex with him.
Rafferty was booked into jail Aug. 6 and has since been released, according to jail records.
She was charged Sept. 9 with third-degree child rape, a felony sex offense in which the severity of charge is tied directly to the alleged victim's age.
Assault at Bus Stop
An assault occurred at a Metro Bus Stop, South 200th St and International Boulevard South.
The victim was punched and knocked unconscious by more than one unknown subjects. Injuries included a broken nose and jaw. Surgery was needed to put metal plates into the jaw bone.
No suspect information was available and no arrests were made at the time.
Robbers Scared Off By Child
Two men were unsuccessful at a robbery of a home on 16500 block of Des Moines Memorial Drive.
One of the men broke the glass window of the home and entered, only to be scared off by the 15 year old boy that lived in the home.
The second male suspect was waiting outside to be let in.
Both men ran off and were picked up my a female accomplice in and older brown SUV.
