The ninth annual Loop the 'Lupe is set to transform Walt Hundley Playfield in West Seattle on Saturday, June 7th, 2025, into Seattle's only obstacle course within city limits. It's a 5K fun run built around a 1K loop. Participants navigate the "Loop" five times to complete the 5K distance. Each lap features a series of challenges, including tires, walls, and mud pits.
Whether you're a seasoned athlete looking for a challenge or a family seeking fun, Loop the 'Lupe offers options for almost everyone aged 1 to 93. For those seeking intense competition, the first wave is the Elite Wave, open to racers 16 and older. This wave ups the ante with nine obstacles per loop, totaling 45 obstacles over the 5K. If you're looking for ninja challenges like wall-climbing and mud-crawling but prefer a slightly less intense experience, the Family Wave is available, suitable for all experience levels with seven obstacles per loop. Beyond the obstacle course, there's also a traditional 5K run/walk with no obstacles. Younger participants (ages 1-8) can tackle the Youth Dash, completing one 1K loop with seven obstacles under adult supervision. For older participants, the Senior Saunter offers a 100% flat walk with no obstacles.
Registration comes with tiered pricing depending on when you sign up. The earlier you register, the less expensive it is, with prices increasing closer to race day. For example, the Elite Wave started at $38 but ended March 21st and increases to $55 if you register on June 6th or 7th. The Family Wave/5K starts at $33 and goes up to $50, while the Youth Dash/Senior Saunter begins at $25, rising to $35 by race day. Remember, prices increase after June 5, 2025, at 11:59 pm PDT.
There are also ways to reduce or even eliminate your entry fee. You can get a free entry by referring five friends who register using your unique referral link. Alternatively, you can become a fundraiser for the event; raising $100 or more makes your entry free, and top fundraisers can also earn prizes. Team discounts are available: registering 4-10 people at once gets each person a $3 refund, and groups of 11 or more receive a $5 refund per entry. There's even a bundle option with the Float Dodger race that offers a $5 discount per event.
Beyond the mud, sweat, and fun, the purpose of the Loop the 'Lupe is fundamentally about community support and social outreach. This event serves as a major annual fundraiser for Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in West Seattle. The registration fees and donations directly support crucial social outreach work. This work helps 1,700 local people in need annually, providing assistance with rent/mortgage, food, medicine, and more. It also funds a prison re-entry program, assists refugee/immigrant communities, helps shut-ins and the elderly, supports a safe parking program for homeless people coordinated by the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, and aids migrant workers in the state and their families. The funds raised help people of all ages and backgrounds and are directly focused on the local West Seattle community.
All participants receive a tech race t-shirt, though sizes may be limited for those who register after May 16th. Finishers also earn a specially designed medal featuring a "mud"-spattered ribbon and a rotating foot logo. Prizes are awarded for top finishers, best costumes, and top fundraisers, thanks to sponsors like West Seattle Runner, Ounces Taproom, City Sweats, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, and Avalon Glassworks. After conquering the course, participants can enjoy post-race fun including live music, food, and a beer/cider garden. There's even a soccer expo match and penalty kick shootout competition. If you're covered in mud, showers are available. For those unable to make it to the park, a virtual racing option allows you to participate from anywhere by completing your own obstacle course and posting a video online, still earning a t-shirt and potentially prizes.
Ultimately, participating in Loop the 'Lupe, in any capacity, supports the vital social outreach work of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, making a tangible difference in the local community.
