A call for peace echoed along the West Seattle waterfront on Sunday, September 21, as around 150 people gathered for the "Peace For All Rally and Human Banner Project". The event, sponsored by West Seattle Indivisible, was held to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace and advocate for peace at local, national, and global levels.
The rally took place from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM at 2130 Harbor Ave SW, a "retired" dock yard located just south of Salty's restaurant. A key feature of the event was the planned formation of a 1,000-person human banner spelling out "PEACE FOR ALL". The turnout was smaller than organizers had hoped, with each letter requiring about 100 people.
The event featured a diverse lineup of speakers, including Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, who delivered a powerful message of unity and resistance. He addressed the crowd, stating:
“Many of you have lived for this moment. And all of our life experiences right now have culminated in this moment. So we are in this fight together. We know the 10th amendment. We know due process. We know federal overreach. We know immigrant refugee rights. We will not let these idiotic racist policies win, because here in Seattle we are winners".
The rally was emceed by Port of Seattle Commissioner Hamdi Mohamad. Other notable speakers included Malou Chavez, Executive Director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project; Reverend Andrew Conley-Holcomb from Admiral UCC; and Irene Danysh, Development Officer at Ukrainian Catholic University.
West Seattle Indivisible, the sponsoring organization, emphasizes a core principle of nonviolent action for all its events and asks participants to commit to de-escalating potential confrontations. The group encouraged attendees to join the event "to help send a message of unity to end the global and domestic travesties we witness daily"
