The Seattle Public Schools project to replace the original Alki Elementary School with a modern, multi-story facility reached several major milestones as of late 2025. The approximately 80,000-square-foot replacement school is being built while also modernizing the existing gymnasium and preserving the nearby community center.
Brian Fabella, Project Manager. Department of Capital Projects and Planning for Seattle Public Schools said, "Progress is going well and we are on track to open the new school this Fall. We will start construction on the Parkway Improvements (the area immediately north of the new school, between the school and the Alki playfields) around March. We have been coordinating with Seattle Parks throughout the project."
This is part of the library that cantilevers out from the facade. The exterior of it will receive an exterior insulation that will go in between the green vertical struts, and then a metal panel cladding will cover the assembly. "The views from the library are fantastic and the design team wanted to provide this opportunity for a learning space that will be used by all the students regularly." said Brian Fabella
Work Completed Thus Far
Recent major activity through December 2025 focused on both the building’s envelope and its interior systems. Construction teams have finished the exterior masonry (brickwork) and have begun building the exterior canopy structure. Site-related improvements also reached a turning point with the completion of road restoration on the east side of 59th Ave SW.
On the interior, the school is rapidly taking shape with the following progress:
• Floor 1: Crews have installed cabinets, countertops, and sinks, and are currently working on the secure entry installation.
• Floor 2: Window installations are underway to provide natural light to the new classrooms.
• Core Systems: The installation of kitchen equipment, the elevator, and resilient flooring has officially begun.
• Finishes: Interior work is continuing throughout the school, including painting, ceiling grids, and ceramic tile.
Projected Path to Opening
According to the official project timeline, the reconstruction is currently in the construction phase, which is the final major step in the development process. Following the completion of this phase, the project’s next and final milestone is to open the facility for students and staff. While construction activity was heavily documented in December 2025, the timeline confirms that the "Open" phase immediately follows the current construction efforts.
In addition to the building itself, the finished site will include stormwater management systems, parking for 15 vehicles, and a new playground featuring equipment designed for children ages 2 to 12.
