Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) has officially finalized the design for a new community park at 4723-4731 40th Ave SW and is currently soliciting construction bids. The 0.38-acre project, located in the high-density West Seattle Junction neighborhood, is scheduled to begin construction this fall 2026, with a grand opening anticipated for summer 2027.

A Vision Years in the Making
The property was originally purchased in 2012 to provide essential open space for local residents. While the public design process was conducted between 2017 and 2018, the project faced significant delays during the COVID-19 pandemic as the city shifted resources toward essential services. Funding was ultimately secured in September 2022 through the Seattle Park District’s 2023–2028 cycle, which allocated $3.014 million for the site’s planning, design, and construction.
Park Features and Community Priorities
The final design incorporates the top three elements requested by the community during public outreach: native plantings, a drinking fountain, and natural play elements. According to the rendered site plan, the park will include:
- A nature-themed play area with synthetic turf and specific play equipment.
- Carefully selected native plants and trees, including a "Coastal Forest" planting zone.
- Leisurely walking paths and a picnic lawn.
- A long, shaded concrete seating wall and additional benches.
Two premium features—a wooden boardwalk system and decorative seating stones—are currently listed as "funding dependent" and will only be included if the final budget allows.
Integration and Access
The park is designed to seamlessly integrate into the neighborhood on the west side of 40th Ave SW. For residents eager to see the progress, SPR has provided a digital portal to view the site plan and follow development updates.
