Located at 5400 Fauntleroy Way SW, the site is currently closed to the public as crews work to convert the traditionally mud-prone dirt softball infield into a high-performance synthetic turf surface.

Current Status: Construction in Full Swing

As of July 2026, the project has transitioned from the design and permitting phase into active construction. Neighbors will notice significant activity this summer, including the demolition of the old dirt infield, site grading, and the installation of essential drainage systems.

The project scope extends beyond the playing surface, featuring facility upgrades such as new backstops and dugouts. Additionally, the city is installing ADA-compliant concrete pathways to ensure the playground and ballfield are accessible to all community members.

Addressing Playability and Equity

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) initiated the conversion to combat the chronic "mud pit" conditions that frequently lead to game cancellations during Seattle's wet spring sports season. Beyond weather concerns, city officials highlighted the project as a step toward gender equity. By providing synthetic turf for youth softball—a sport primarily serving girls' programs—the city aims to match the year-round access already available to local baseball and soccer teams on turf fields.

Environmental Considerations

To address concerns about microplastics and heat, SPR is utilizing its modern standard for turf: a sand and organic cork infill system.
