On Feb. 28 Michael Stanley, 49, broke into the Skyway home of a 69-year-old woman and raped her. Stanley was arrested only blocks away from her house the same day and charged with Burglary in the First Degree and Rape in the Second Degree. A bail amount of 1 million dollars has been set.
According to charging documents just after 10 p.m. on Feb. 27 Stanley showed up to the victim’s Skyway home and knocked on the door asking for work. Stanley had done yard work for the woman last summer and told her he needed money. The victim told officers she could tell he was drunk and turned him away.
He was allowed into her house to use the bathroom quickly and then went outside and stood in her yard while waiting for his bus to arrive. The victim decided to go for a short walk and when she returned home Stanley was gone.
That night while getting ready for bed Stanley reappeared in the victim’s bathroom, naked, and attacked her. After a brief fight Stanley began pressing his hand over her mouth and nose, suffocating her, and then led her to the downstairs level of the home. The victim was screaming the entire time so Stanley pressed a pillow over her face and forced her to take her sweatpants off.
After multiple attempts at penetration he told the victim he wanted to watch her wash herself. Once they were back in her bathroom he told her that he needed her to give him a ride to a detox center in Seattle. The victim went along with this plan and drove him to a friend’s house.
The next morning around 8 a.m. Stanley showed up at her door again and demanded she drive him to detox. After calling a friend for help the authorities were contacted and an officer made the arrest a short time later.
Waiving his rights and giving a recorded statement at the scene he offered an ever changing story of how he ended up at the victim’s house. At first his story was that they had run into each other at a nearby Walgreen’s but had never gone into her home. Eventually the story turned into one where the victim had taken Stanley’s food stamps in exchange for sex.
While searching Stanley and his belongings the arresting officer recovered the victim’s sweatpants.
“Arraignment is scheduled for March 16 at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 1201 of the King County Courthouse. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a minimum sentence range of 15 to 20 years up to an indeterminate maximum of life in prison,” explained Dan Donohoe with the King County Prosecutor’s Office.
Michael Stanley’s extensive and violent history
A Level III sex offender Stanley has made headlines over the years for his violent and predatory crimes, building himself a reputation for snatching children from playgrounds in Canada.
First in 1988 Stanley broke into the apartment of an elderly woman confined to a wheelchair in Edmonton, Canada and raped her. Later that same night he was found and arrested in another apartment with two underage girls and a 15-month-old baby.
After being convicted for this crime Stanley served nine years in prison.
In 2004 he was arrested and convicted for luring two mentally challenged boys, ages 9 and 13, into an apartment and then proceeding to blow crack smoke in their faces while kissing them. That same year he was again accused of raping another young girl with those charges later being dismissed.
After serving 32 months in prison Stanley was outfitted with an electronic ankle monitoring bracelet in Alberta. In 2013 he cut the bracelet off and fled across the border to Seattle. Canada chose not to extradite him since he was born in America and has citizenship here.
West Seattle residents and readers will most readily recognize his name from an Oct. 22, 2013 incident on the 2400 block of 44th Ave. S.W. Only days after arriving in Seattle from Canada and registering himself as a sex offender in the area Stanley met a 16-year-old boy at a local grocery store and lured him into an alley in the Admiral Junction with promises of alcohol.
Once in the alleyway Stanley allegedly grabbed the boy and attempted to sexually assault him. Neighbors could hear the struggle and began yelling at the two from their windows. Stanley began yelling back threats of physical violence. The boy managed to pull a knife and slip away.
Responding officers found Stanley in a garbage can and a struggle ensued before officers managed to arrest him. The sexual assault case was later dropped but harassment charges stuck.
Most recently, last December, Stanley broke into the Stafford Healthcare nursing home at 2800 S. 224 St. in Des Moines. When nurses found him in an employee break room he was wearing a badge that read “Maureen”. As one employee began dialing 911 Stanley grabbed two steak knives and threatened to stab anyone who would try and stop him as he fled. When officers located him blocks away with the knives a Taser was used to bring him down.
At the time of his arrest for the rape Stanley listed himself as homeless with an address at the Compass Housing Alliance at 77 S. Washington in Pioneer Square. The incident in Skyway comes just 6 days after he was released from incarceration for the break-in incident in December.
Along with sexual assault charges there is also a DUI from 2000, multiple resisting arrest charges, and multiple burglary charges.
