A president once told the American nation on the edge of war that the only thing we had to fear is fear itself.

We can apply that to those parents and offspring who are facing the possibility that their school will be closed and the students will be dispersed helter-skelter around West Seattle. There are fears that cherished programs will be lost, that children will be separated from their friends or siblings, that valued teachers will be gone.

In short, they fear change.

But these are only preliminary proposals, not final plans.

Sounds like a done deal, however, the Parks Committee and Council better take a long and serious look at this project.

The property in question was an auto repair shop and previously had gasoline and possibly oil tanks underground. It seems very possible that this land could be contaminated. Before even thinking about locating a park at this site, testing should be done.

Another reason is a concern to our children. The park will be located adjacent to one tavern and about 50 to 75 yards from another tavern.

Lori Hinton's article about Coyotes Mexican Grill would have been better titled, "Alcoholics and drunkards encouraged to make Alki their home." Gee, what happened to Hinton's earlier focus in "101 Things to do in West Seattle" that didn't involve going out to dinner or getting sloshed? Her story about Coyote mentions alcohol eight different times.

Is there nothing else to do at Coyote except drink? Oh, yes. One can drink to excess with the "giant, 46 ounce, fish bowl-size Coyotes ultimate margarita." That would be 14 ounces more than a quart.

It started out cloudy but by the end of the day the sun was up, the garbage was out and the halibut steaks were smoking.

The 11th annual Lake Washington Ship Canal cleanup concluded four hours after volunteers began fishing everything from wood, to coupons, to unopened cans of beer in waters stretching from the Fremont Bridge to the Ballard Locks.

More than 100 people participated in the event, which began at 9 a.m.

Seattle Public Schools has released a list of preliminary closure and consolidation recommendations for the second year in a row. Four schools in the Northwest quadrant could either be closed down for good or moved to other buildings.

The 14-member community advisory committee, appointed by the district in March, recommends that Viewlands Elementary School be closed, sending its students to nearby schools.
