Diet?--Maybe next year

If Ever I Would Diet

If ever I would diet

It wouldn’t be in summer.

Seeing Strawberry Festival shortcake,

Fourth of July potato salad,

peanuts and Cracker Jacks at the Mariners games,

grilled steaks and cheeseburgers on the outdoor barbecue,

B-Scoop ice cream cones

And frosty beer

that puts gold to shame!

Reopening theater was not 'mission impossible'

When customers and staff at B&E Meats heard Des Moines Theater (Cinema) might reopen after a six-month closure for repairs, questions came flying from all directions.

“When?” “What’s the first movie?” “Do they need help to get it ready?”

It’s amazing the ownership residents of this city feel for their little old-single-screen Des Moines Cinema.

Although the building is 59 years old, the movies will be brand new.

Who authorized pro-position?

I had the opportunity to watch KCTS tonight and I would like to know who gave David Cline (interim Burien City Manager) the authority to speak from a pro-annexation position.

He said during the debate that Burien is the kind of community that listens to its citizens. Who is David Cline listening to? Himself? The council? If the council, who is the council listening to?

Since we, the citizens of Burien, do not get a chance to vote on the annexation, it seems that the council should do its utmost to get the most input possible from the citizens of Burien.

Illegals called thieves

Any and every person who came across the U.S. borders in a attempt to gain the benefits of U.S. residency or citizenship without paying the price of legal entry is a thief.

Illegals have stolen the most valuable commodity that any of us possess, our birthright and identify as American citizens. As I watched the organized citizenship demonstrations, I felt as if they are telling me that they have a right to be here and that they have a right to demand citizenship.

Editing distorted letter

Thanks for taking my letter and editing it to fit your political viewpoint! I understand you cut letters to fit space, but you cut mine to make it read like a milk-toast approval of illegal immigration. Nothing could be farther from the truth!

Had you the cajones to print the meat of the letter, your readers would see that. You had to be so PC and so accommodating! And in the process, you have done me and your readers a grave disservice.

Vote yes on levy lid lift

Thank you for your recent article on the Des Moines levy lid lift. This levy is specifically to restore police positions that were eliminated during the city’s belt-tightening over the last six years.

While many of us enjoy relative security in our homes and neighborhoods and may have reached the point of complacency, we must realize that the crime rate has indeed increased in Des Moines since 2000, and we are tangibly affected by it.

City needs more cops

The Des Moines Police Department really needs our help. The officers are currently working mandatory overtime because of the small number of them on the streets. And, we all know what this can do to family life and the extra unneeded stress during working hours.

If the police department does not get needed funding, a lot of the common duties they now perform for our citizens will be drastically cut. Some of the things they are talking about cutting back are calls to residences for burglaries, car break-ins or thefts and car accidents.

Tax alternatives noted

The Levy Lid Lift has returned for a vote on May 16. Our citizenry must decide once again as to the tradeoff as between their desire for personal safety and their wallets. The decision need not be overly difficult. Consider for a moment those things that so pique widespread community concern -- Taxes, Public Safety, and Property Values.

TAXES: By all means, taxes should be reduced to the point where they are, as they are for the rich, a minor nuisance.
