Two Ballard school principals chosen

Superintendent Raj Manhas and Chief Academic Officer Carla Santorno have announced principal appointments for the 2007-2008 school year.

"I am very impressed by the caliber of the individuals appointed to principal roles for 2007-2008," said Superintendent Raj Manhas. "We have promoted a number of talented individuals from within the district, and attracted several excellent leaders from surrounding districts."

For the first time the open recruitment process included a hands-on demonstration of each applicant's strengths as instructional leaders.

Nominations sought for business award

The city of Seattle is now accepting nominations for the 2007 Mayor's Small Business Awards.

The awards will honor the diversity and excellence of Seattle's small businesses, and their contribution to the city's economic vitality and quality of life. Ten winners will be selected on the basis of excellence in management, entrepreneurial spirit, customer service, and community involvement.

This will be the 23rd year of the Mayor's Small Business Awards program.

Workshops for kids of divorced parents open in Greenwood

Circle Dynamics a new group offering workshops that empower school-age children of divorced parents has opened in the Greenwood area.

The company was started by Erin Byrnes, a counselor at Foster High School in Tukwila and Tanya Salmi, a counselor at Seattle's Hazel Wolf High School.

Both women are single parents who have gone through divorces.

Girls Golf- Beaver girls take third

After years at the bottom of the standings, the Ballard Beaver girl golfers are now the third best team in the league with two players going to state while also being named to the All-KingCo team.

The icing on the cake came when other KingCo golf coaches voted Ballard's Stan Geddes as Coach of the Year.

"It's great. It shows me other coaches are aware of the progress we have made. We used to be a joke, they did not want to play us, it was no fun," said Geddes.

Masters times offered

The Federal Way Masters swimming team for ages 19 and over is now offering three workout session times at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center located at 650 SW Campus Drive in Federal Way.

Monday through Friday a 5:30-6:45 a.m. and a 7-8 p.m.session are offered, with a 6:50-7:50 a.m. session taking place Tuesdays and Thursdays. A 10:15-11:15 a.m. session is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Saturdays an 8-9 a.m. session is held at the Kenneth Jones Pool (Federal Way High School).

Members are required to join U.S.

Boys tennis

Class 4A West Central District action opened Wednesday, May 16, with the opening round and quarterfinals taking place.

Colin Zalewski and Kyle Christianson of Todd Beamer made it to the quarterfinals but lost to Andrew Sing and Keith Bradley-Hewett of Olympia to be knocked into consolation play. Zalewski and Christianson won their opening match, 7-6 (4), 6-2, over Jeff Collen and Matt Henderson of Gig Harbor.

Sam Yi and Branden Muraki of Thomas Jefferson lost their opener by a 6-0, 6-1 score to Henry and Cameron Williams of Olympia.

Maxine Ramona Tweney

2/16/1918 - 5/16/2007

Maxine R. Tweney, 89, passed away peacefully in Grand Junction, Colorado, on May 6, 2007, from complications following a stroke.

Maxine was born February 16, 1918, in Doland, South Dakota, the only child to Mayme Ultstad-Calvert and Warren Calvert. Maxine was raised in Marcus, Iowa, and lived for a time in Evergreen, Colorado, where she met George H. Tweney.

Carol Linebarger

Carol Linebarger, age 81, passed away on May 16, 2007, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. She will be dearly missed by her family: son Ron Linebarger (Sally) of Kent, daughter Janice Nelson (Jack) of Birmingham, Alabama, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister Phyllis Jansen (Len) of Rochester, Minnesota, and many close friends.

Carol was preceded in death by Dale Linebarger, her beloved husband of 56 years.

Carol grew up in Faribault, Minnesota, and after her marriage lived in Edwall, Burien, Belfair, Des Moines and Federal Way.

Willard C. Julum

Willard C. Julum died suddenly May 9, 2007, of a heart attack at Lake Tapps. Services were held May 15 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Auburn, and he was buried at Gethsemane, Federal Way.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jean Payne-Julum, sons Brad of Olympia and Blaze of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; daughter Darcie (Billy) Jacobsen of Lake Tapps; four grandchildren; and sister Marian Jules-Weaver of Seattle.

He graduated from Highline High School as ASB president in 1951.

He and his best friend Ken Leingang enrolled at Eastern Washington University.

George C. ANEX

George C Anex passed away on the morning of April 17, 2007, in Des Moines. He touched countless lives in his 83 years, as a businessman, friend, father and husband.

George was born June 10, 1923, in Sumner, and moved with his family when he was still a toddler to Boulevard Park. He was in the Class of '41 at Highline High School, where he excelled in academics and sports, winning an athletic scholarship to Yale University. Drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, his college days were cut short.
