Des Moines Man charged with murder for shooting fleeing wife

May 1-Karl Vance, 45, of Des Moines, has been charged with first-degree murder and second-degree assault for the April 27 killing of his estranged wife, Monique Vance.

She died bleeding in the doorway of a Des Moines apartment after he allegedly shot her-with a gun he'd been ordered to give up.

King County Prosecutor's office spokesman Dan Donohoe said last week that prosecutors might boost the charge to aggravated murder, which would allow for a death sentence or life in prison without parole.

Vance had been ordered to surrender his guns in February when SeaTa

Some good legislation among the mostly bad

TIMES/NEWS

A billion here and a billion there and pretty soon you're talking about real money.

Former Sen. Everett Dirksen

R-Illinois

Washington taxpayers can breathe easier now that the Legislature has gone home for the year. The damage, which is bad enough, could have been worse.

Even so, we are saddled with a two-year state operating budget that increases spending by 15 percent above this biennium.

Hotels will benefit Burien

I realize one hotel has been planned for downtown Burien, but they need to attract four or five hotels, with the selling point that it is easier and faster for hotel vans to drive to Burien on SR 518 than to battle the traffic on Highway 99.

With the correct planning, the businessmen would enjoy an evening stroll more along tree-lined Southwest 152nd Street than along traffic-clogged smog-invested Highway 99.

New tactic can ID vandals

The graffiti scribblers struck again in Lakewood Park, possibility on a Sunday evening, defacing the restrooms and picnic shelters. These units had recently been pressure washed and re-painted.

Painting out the graffiti is not a deterrent as graffiti scribblers keep repeating.

Video cameras we feel are the only solution to identify these culprits.

Costco has a recording unit with four video cameras for around $1,400.

Songwriter Steve Goodman profiled

You've probably heard more about the people Clay Eals interviewed for his new book than the person whom the book is about.

Eals spent the past four years researching and writing a book called "Steve Goodman: Facing the Music." A songwriter and performer in the 1970s and early '80s, Goodman's most famous song was "City of New Orleans," which was made into a hit by Arlo Guthrie.

Alki Beach 'boot camp' takes exercise to 'the next level'

As bikini season approaches, exercise often becomes a higher priority. Anne Binder offers an innovative way to kick-start the weekend in a healthy way: boot camp. Borrowing moves from a military-style workout, her boot camp meets every Saturday morning on Alki Beach; the class starts at 8 a.m. and lasts just over an hour.

According to Binder, Alki is a perfect location for working out because it is accessible, beautiful and has creative terrain. "Living in West Seattle makes me appreciate and value the beach and all it has to offer," says Binder.

West Seattle High School takes a few turns with 'Carousel'

This month, the West Seattle High drama department is putting on their rendition of "Carousel."

The school has been running plays and musicals for five straight years as part of a growing drama program.

"Carousel" is a dramatic story of love between a carousel barker and a mill worker in late 19th-century New England.

There is only one problem: Neither of them can admit they are in love.

The larger parts in the musical are played by veterans including Nick Wichman, Kelly Thoma, Zack Desmond, Chantal McCargo, Gemma Clarke and Chris Morson.
