Golfers converge on Twin Lakes for charity and prizes

Change was in the wind.

No, the annual Federal Way Boys & Girls Club Celebrity tournament did not get its first rainfall in its 32 year history.

The weather forecasters said the rain would come, but rain came through early Thursday morning instead and the skies were broken up and the sunshine warm for the noon shotgun start - despite the breeze that did show up.

What changed most was the tournament host after almost as many years the event existed.

Retired KOMO sportscaster Bruce King stepped down and current Seattle SuperSonics broadcaster Kevin Cal

Southwest King County residents will celebrate America's 231st birthday in grand style the way John Adams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, predicted it would be-"with pomp and parade, with shows, games ... and illuminations (fireworks)."

Jayhawks cruise past Mariners

Efficient and economic offerings from the off -speed pitching of Kyle Anderton sent the Kent Jayhawks flying by the Steel Lake Mariners 8-2 in the title game of the 2007 District 10 Little League Baseball Tournament of Champions hosted by Federal Way American Little League on Tuesday, June 12.

For three and two-thirds innings, Anderton baffled Mariner batters to the tune of a perfect game.

Hitting third in the Steel Lake batting order, shortstop Brett Oyer destroyed the perfect game no-hitter and the shutout with one mighty swing that rocketed an Anderton pitch over the f

Fife, Milton, Edgewood and Auburn team up to win

Fife, Milton, Edgewood, the pretty-much bordering King County communities combined to make up a championship girls 9-10 age Little League all stars softball team this 2007 season.

"We are pretty much the Fife, Milton, Edgewood area, but we also have some that are from unincorporated Auburn," said manager Kurt Schwan, who himself lives in unincorporated Auburn, which is really the Federal Way area, by Jovita Boulevard and Five Mile Lake.

"It is a big area in size, but it is spread out. There are not a whole lot of residents.

How is a health club like a horse ranch?

It's been about six months since the doctor ordered me to join a gym.

So, how's it going?

You sometimes read about people like West Seattle's Peter Beeson.

Six years ago, he weighed about 350 pounds and wore a size XXX-Large+2. Now he weighs 170 pounds and fits into a medium.

Exercising led him into cycling, big time.

According to the West Seattle Herald, earlier this month Beeson traveled to San Diego for the Elite Transcontinental Tour.

Morrie Skaret shows how to catch a lonely Lothario

You may remember that I introduced you to the remarkable (94-year-old) Morrie Skaret in this space last week.

When my wife, Elsbeth, and I went to talk with Morrie in his large home near the Fauntleroy ferry dock, he came out to greet us.

Standing on the porch a pretty little lady watched us approach. Morrie said, "Come in and meet my lady friend. She is that good looker up there."

The good looker turned out to be Elsie Freeland, who lives next door.

Op-Ed - Santorno gets to decide

I have served for the last four months as an alternate parent/community representative to the Four Period Day Steering Committee and I'm pleased to see a healthy, ongoing and overdue public discussion regarding the four-period day at West Seattle High School.

The steering committee, composed mainly of West Seattle High School staff members and some parents, will not reach a consensus but rather will be submitting multiple position papers to Carla Santorno, Seattle Public School's chief academic officer, on June 29 for a final decision regarding the future schedule at West Seattle Hi

Chinese Garden to get 'Knowing Spring' plaza

Like a generous sibling, Seattle's Chinese sister city, Chongqing, has just donated $1.2 million for the "Knowing the Spring Courtyard," the first phase of the Seattle Chinese Garden. Located just beyond the north parking lot of South Seattle Community College, the 50- by 70-foot site will serve as the first of several courtyards within the 4.6 acre Chinese garden. It will feature dramatic rock formations, mosaic floor, source pool, and varieties of pines, magnolias, and rhododendrons native to Chongqing.
