Tukwila celebrates 100th birthday

Tukwila has always had trouble getting respect-even from its beginnings, according to Tukwila Mayor Jim Haggerton.

While the Denny Party landed at Alki Beach, getting credit as the first European settlement in Puget Sound, the Collins Party actually arrived in the Tukwila area five months earlier, Haggerton noted.

That was just one of the fascinating facts revealed on Jan.

Blighted Des Moines area to be transformed?

What may be the single largest retail/residential development ever in the Highline area - SSI Pacific Place in Des Moines - is now in the design stage.

"It is one of the greatest projects that the city has ever been involved in," Mayor Bob Sheckler said last week.

Noting the development will revitalize the Pacific Ridge area along Pacific Highway South (Highline 99), Sheckler added, "It will help reduce crime. It will create jobs and generate revenue.

Plan outlined to reform 'rogue port'

State Sen. Karen Keiser (D-Des Moines) will enter a bill to remove the emergency clause which allows the Port of Seattle to collect property taxes without a vote of the people. This is based upon the damning performance audit prepared by the State Auditor.

Tim Eyman has indicated to the papers that he is interested in preparing a similar initiative to do the same thing. Democrats will outflank the Republicans on reducing taxes if the Legislature passes this bill. No public programs will be hurt!

The audit covered three years. The tip of a 20-year iceberg.

That the power to tax involves the power to destroy ... [is] not to be denied.

Chief Justice John Marshall

Readers of this column know I express on occasion differences with 33rd District Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Des Moines, most of them involving taxation and spending by the Legislature.

So when Sen. Keiser comes down solidly on the side of taxpayers, as she did last week, it is right to give credit where credit is due.

Southcenter replaced string beans

The City of Tukwila, which stretches from the Seattle city limits to SeaTac and Kent, put on a big celebration last week to embrace its former farmers, who were founders, on this 100th year since one of them first plowed the rich Green River Valley bottom land.

The celebrants did it on top of a huge new parking garage behind the Southcenter Sears store in a temporary tent.

Elsbeth and I went to salute the pioneers, watch some skits put on by Foster High kids, eat some snacks and go to lunch at a huge new eatery called Cheesecake.

The whole event was designed to

Let me see if I have this right. With two months advance notice, Roy Parke, Dave McKenzie, Norma Blanchard, Tara Talley, Diana Parke or Clara MacArthur, all Board of Directors Members of Accountability Comes to Town (ACT) could not be available to represent ACT at the January 16th debate sponsored by the Mirror and Chamber of Commerce? If the Mirror and Chamber knew this in advance, they had a responsibility to tell the audience ACT was not represented before the start of the debate. If they did not know it then ACT is guilty of serious irresponsibility.
