Conservation Leadership Corps Orientation at Camp Long

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is a national nonprofit organization founded in 1957 to restore and protect America's public lands and preserve them for future generations.

SCA members are high school and college-age volunteers who build trails, restore habitat, guide interpretive hikes, study plants and animals, and participate in many other conservation-related projects.

For the past four years, SCA Seattle's Conservation Leadership Corps has started off their year at Camp Long.

With the subject of accountability on the table, Accountability Comes to Town absent

Federal Way's form of government, now in place for nearly 18 years, faces its first significant challenge from a group of vocal citizens who want to reshape the city's political infrastructure.

The philosophical and political battle that appears to gain momentum and intensity clashed in a public forum Wednesday, January 16, as both sides of issue presented their case to a divided audience and a seemingly objective panel of moderators.

Update: Statue plaza funding goal met and exceeded

Nearly $175,000.

On the afternoon of their deadline, Paul and Libby Carr counted $174,940 in donations to the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project, coming in more than 11 percent over their target.

And the checks continue to pour in.

The total includes $10,550 left over from fund-raising by the Northwest Program for the Arts after it had the statue recast; and a pledge by Mayor Greg Nickels for $50,000 from the 2008 city budget.

In mid-December, their committee was $64,000 short. Two weeks ago, they were looking for the last $25,000.

Back in my parent's town the owner of the Bagel Shop asked my sister why Herb doesn't stop in for coffee any more. She had grandfathered his rate at 50 cents. The answer is that he can't park close enough and he's discovered that if he sits in front of the Daybreak Caf/, someone may bring out a cup of coffee, or else he can slowly make his way inside.

Gators wrestlers pin Kentlake at home

An evening of lop-sided matches worked in the Gators' favor last Thursday night, as the Decatur wrestling squad emerged from the rubble victorious on their home mat.

Only four of the evening's 14 battles resulted in a decision. The others ended up with one wrestler pinned, usually quickly into the match.

When tallying the score, those crucial pins made the difference for Decatur, as the two teams split the 14 matches with seven wins each.
