Vote for Obama

This is the first time I have written a comment to be shared. But I abhor what the Republicans are doing to deface Obama and twist the facts, citing part of quotations but dropping the rest of it, thus presenting lies.

It is distressing to see how vicious and dishonest McCain/Palin are being. Now think about it, if they show their dark colors in this campaign, how will this mode of operation work with our country and the world? I bet that after all this dishonesty and avoidance of the issues/details he is well practiced to do this in the future to the world and us.

Des Moines cuts discussed

The City of Des Moines is facing a $2.9 million budget shortfall for 2009.

At the city council meeting on Oct. 9, Des Moines lawmakers began preliminary discussions on where cuts could be made to balance the budget.

Loss in revenues and employee costs are being blamed for the shortfall.

There are three police officer positions still waiting to be filled to bring the force back to where it was in 1999. One budget balancing suggestion was to hold off filling those spots.

Burien mulls conservative budget

Burien city officials touted the preliminary budget for 2009 - 2010 as a fiscally conservative one at the council meeting on Oct. 6.

"We're in a heck of a transition," said City Manger Mike Martin. "Because of the volatility of the market and economic situation, the budget we have is conserved and balanced."

Martin credited this achievement to "generally good management" on the part of the council.

He noted this is Burien's first biennial budget, meaning it covers the next two fiscal years, starting on Jan. 1, 2009 to Dec.
