January 2009

Correction

In the Jan. 7 issue of the Ballard News-Tribune, construction on Golden Gardens Drive was said to be complete by mid-February ("Golden Gardens Drive will open in February," pg. 12). Golden Gardens Drive is expected to be complete by mid-January. We regret the error.

Ballard groups plan 2009 goals for parks, streets

As community projects in 2008 have been finalized and have come to a successful close, Ballard neighborhood groups have only begun to plan out what they have in store for their communities in the new year with ideas to take advantage of the renewed parks levy, creating safer streets for pedestrians and bicyclists and raising money to expand or create new projects.

14th Avenue NW Visioning Project

The 14th Avenue NW Visioning Project committee made great strides in 2008 and ended the year with a dedication celebration for the completion of the new intersection at Northwes

Produce will sail into Ballard

Sail Transport Network has teamed up with Sustainable Ballard and led a team of volunteers to haul an array of organic produce and food from Kitsap County Farmers to the public dock of Ballard's Shilshole Bay Marina.

Dave Reid, co-founder of Seattle Peak Oil, took the reigns as lead engineer for Seattle's Sail Transport Network. The concept, originally thought up by California activist Jan Lundberg, is to mitigate peak oil and climate change.

Summing it up

I grew up with a small town newspaper that had an annual tradition. The longtime editor started each New Year with a montage of photos culled from the previous 12 months. As a member of the League of Women Voters and founder of the town's recycling program my mother always "made the front page" as we called it.

I remembered that photo montage while supposedly listening to my breath sounds in a yoga class at Ballard Health Club in December. I'd dashed down the stairs (late) and panted that I didn't have my member card because my life was in chaos. "What's going on?" Jade asked.

101 Things to do in Ballard

BalMar-Where Ballard Meets Market

by Esther Shin

At the intersection of Ballard Avenue and N.W. Market Street is trendy bar BalMar - hence the name due to its location. One is wary of using "trendy" when describing Ballard, as the neighborhood is known for its classic character and charm. But this bar is different - think the old meets new.

On any given night you'll find an eclectic mix of people. BalMar has the stylish feel of a downtown bar, but the cozy feeling of a Ballard bar.
