Eagles cruise past Thomas Jefferson and Tacoma

If Thomas Jefferson had not fallen into the Grand Canyon in the first quarter, it might have been an easy hike the rest of the way.

The Raider girls basketball team fell behind Federal Way, 22-0, by the end of the first quarter Thursday, then climbed back to outscore the Eagles, 43-33, over the final three quarters to close the final gap to 55-43.

“I don’t know what happened,” said TJ head coach Jerry Krueger. “They took it at us and we were on our heels. They put the pressure on us the first quarter.

Big Box Stores and Originality? Can Federal Way have both

With two exceptions, I'm a mom-and-pop shop kind of guy.

As a resolution I bound myself to this New Year, in the next 12 months I want to work harder to support the local retailer. It feels almost patriotic to know that my dollar stays in my own community, and doubly so when the little guy sells me products that directly support our state, region or country.

Lately I find myself as likely to cringe at the sight of "Made in China" on a product label as I am "contains partially-hydrogenated oils." Neither of which is healthy, for our economy or our bodies.

Port, public have say on runway

Some airport neighbors testified Jan. 8 that they have become prisoners in their homes after the start up of the new third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport.

A couple said they would like to move but doubt they could sell their homes.

The public comments came following a special afternoon Highline Forum meeting at the airport to discuss use of the new runway.

The forum is made up of representatives from the cities of Burien, Normandy Park, Des Moines, SeaTac, Tukwila and Federal Way as well as the Highline School District and the Port of Seattle.

Floods spare most of Federal Way

Commuters on I-5 battled wet roads as heavy rains pounded Federal Way and the surrounding areas last week. Much of the city was spared from the flooding that devastated many communities in other watersheds, with the exception of the low-lying areas around Milton and Hylebos Creek. Last Wednesday, WSDOT closed two south-bound lanes of I-5 do to flooding waters from Hylebos Creek. The National Weather Service predicts more rain for early Monday and Tuesday, but not in the amounts experienced during last week's storms.

In response to Charles Hoff's column addressing the emphasis in sports over education

To the Editor:

I have seen this kind of sadness--among players and coaches--firsthand--in the schools.

But I've also seen, thank the Lord, some coaches (in TX) who really DO want their players to be good students.

Of course this also helps maintain their eligibility as players, but I found it was also because the coaches thought a "smarter" student was often a "smarter" and more efficient player.

One anecdotal piece of evidence: When I taught math at University High School in Waco in 1989-91, I averaged one white kid in each class.

NEW MTV pilot shot on Harbor Avenue

A damaged BMW in the Seacrest Pier parking lot became further mangled when booby-trapped and ignited Saturday. No worries. The detination was all an act; a scene shot for an MTV reality show pilot, "The Phone," produced by Justin Timberlake, Fremantle, of American Idol fame, and Tick Tock Productions, set to be released by April.

Attending the shoot was James Keblas, Director of the Mayor's office of Film and Music who said, "We've been working on this for a long time so it's good to see it get to going."

A number of feature films were made in the Seattle area last year and Keblas said at least two more are already on the books for 2009. "They all want West Seattle, look at this view!" Keblas said.

Alki Crab and Fish was informed several months ago the scene was to be filmed last October, and a series of postponements brought us to an 8 a.m. estimated detination time, then 8:30 a.m., then 10 a.m. Well, that's show-biz.

By 10:30 the director onsite annouced,"20 minutes."
