Public hearing for single-family code changes

The Seattle City Council will hold a public hearing Oct. 8 on a proposal from the Department of Planning and Development to amend a section of the Seattle Municipal Code to allow issuance of a demolition permit of a residential use in a Single Family zone without first establishing a new use for a lot.

The council’s Planning, Land Use and Neighborhood Committee will hold a public hearing to take comments on the proposal during its Oct. 8 meeting. The meeting is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and will be held in Council Chambers, 2nd floor, Seattle City Hall, 600 Fourth Ave.

The entrances to City Hall are located on the west side of Fifth Avenue, and the east side of Fourth Avenue, between James and Cherry streets. For those who wish to testify, a sign-up sheet will be available outside Council Chambers one-half hour before the public hearing.

Questions concerning the public hearing may be directed to David Yeaworth in Councilmember Clark’s office, by calling (206) 684-8802 or via e-mail at: david.yeaworth@seattle.gov.

SLIDESHOW: Bumbershoot Day 3

Heavy rains continued their deluge on Bumbershoot 2009 during day three of the festival.

Umbrellas and plastic ponchos covered most of the audience at the outdoor stages.

But, the weather didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of the hordes of festival-goers streaming into Memorial Stadium for the Black Eyed Peas' afternoon set. And, volunteers at the indoor visual arts exhibits said they were busier than ever.

The sun, itself, even made one or two appearances to great effect, most notably during Delhi 2 Dublin's set on the Fisher Green Lawn, where the multicultural band led the large crowd in a cheer to the improving weather.

A Healthy Balance: Stress reduction

With stress being a major factor in many illnesses, it is imperative that we follow one of the tenets of naturopathic philosophy and “address the cause."

Without adding stress reduction techniques to our treatments, we run the risk of not doing all we can do to address our illnesses, or worse, of adding to our patients’ burdens through any increased physical or emotional strain caused by various prognoses and subsequent treatment plans (think cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy and the stress they cause).

Many patients with serious illnesses can begin to think their own bodies are betraying them, leaving their consciousness adrift in the middle of enemy territory. Let’s consider some ways to reconnect and use our own bodies to heal themselves.

These days, many cancer patients are benefitting from adding meditation, qui gong or tai chi, yoga or massage to their treatment regimens. Whether the benefit comes from mind over matter, on a quantum level, or through redirecting the flow of qi in its proper channels is debatable, but it is clear that these practices reduce overall stress and aid patients in dealing with their diagnoses.

Bus routes to change to increase connections to Tukwila light-rail station

On Saturday, Sept. 19, King County Metro Transit will begin changes that increase bus rider connections to light rail service at Sound Transit's Link stations in southeast Seattle and Tukwila.
More than 20 Metro bus routes are being revised to reduce duplication of transit services and better connect with light rail service. Some routes will have more frequent service in the morning and evening, and some routes will see service revised, reduced or discontinued.
There are also some revisions in bus routes serving the Tukwila International Boulevard Link Station. More bus changes are scheduled for next February in southwest King County, following the opening of the SeaTac/Airport Link station.
This fall, changes for southeast Seattle, Tukwila, Des Moines, Burien, and Federal Way include:
• New Route 124 will replace Route 174 service between the Tukwila International Boulevard Link Station and downtown Seattle;
• New Route 129 will operate peak-period trips between the Tukwila International Boulevard Link Station and neighborhoods to the north and west, replacing some of Route 170;

New SeaTac YMCA is formally dedicated

Center opens for members Sept. 8, public on Oct. 3

The YMCA of Greater Seattle dedicated its new Matt Griffin YMCA in SeaTac on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The new facility will open for members of the "legacy" Y in Burien and charter members of the SeaTac Y on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
It will open to the general public on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The 48,000 square-foot building features twp 25-yard pools for lap swimming. aquatic classes and youth and older adult programs.
The pools could become a very valuable asset for the Highline community if North Highline's Evergreen and Des Moines' Mt. Rainier pools close permanently.
The new Y also includes a family center, healthy lifestyle room, youth development center, community kitchen, meeting spaces, climbing wall, and full-size gym.
The facility is a silver-rated LEED green building.
Norm Rice, Seattle Foundation president and former YMCA of Seattle board chairman, described Matt Griffin, namesake of the new building, as the major fundraiser for the YMCA in the past 25 years.
"Every beacon has a light and Matt is our light," Rice declared.
Griffin is principal and managing partner of Pine Street Group L.L.C. and has been involved with the Seattle-area Y for almost 30 years.

Todd Beamer High School emerged with the closest game, taking a high-scoring 25-13 loss to Spanaway Lake in a South Puget Sound League South Division opening contest.
Thomas Jefferson journeyed to Tahoma High School in Maple Valley and absorbed a 26-6 loss as its reward.
The Raiders return to action with a 7 p.m. SPSL North Division home game against Kentridge Friday, and Todd Beamer is home playing Graham-Kapowsin in SPSL South action at Federal Way Memorial Saturday.

Decatur deals Emerald Ridge a defeat

There is a lot of season left for these Decatur Gators and second-year head coach Leon Hatch trusts his team will do OK in it if some things go according to plan like their league, home opening game win -- taming the Emerald Ridge Jaguars quickly at Federal Way Memorial Stadium Thursday.
The final score was 31-12, but the Jaguars, the mascot chosen of the biggest cat in North America, scored a late touchdown and it was 18-6 at halftime and would have been 18-0 but for a freak lineman interception of the Decatur QB's throw and then a run in for a touchdown for the Jaguars with a minute left in the second quarter to break their goose egg total.
What stood out from this first season game, coach?
"Just overall team play," said Hatch, who comes to the Gators' program from coaching Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma and taking them from a winless team -- or close to it -- his first year at Mount Tahoma to a playoff calibre team his last in 2007.
"We had some kids step up," said Hatch, who didn't say but several players played in place of ineligible players who did not have enough practices in or another similar exclusion keeping them from this game.
