Meetings will discuss Delridge Playfield improvements

Seattle Parks and Recreation will hold two public meetings with the community to discuss improvements at Delridge Playfield.

The first meeting was held on Monday, Oct. 19, and the second will be on Monday, Nov. 23. Both meetings are from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Delridge Community Center located at 4501 Delridge Way S.W.

The field renovation includes replacing the existing all-weather sand/silt fields with synthetic turf to provide adult soccer and Ultimate Frisbee. It will also improve ADA accessibility and replace the existing field lights with more energy efficient, neighbor friendly lighting.

The Parks and Green Spaces Levy provides $3.2 million for project funding. Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2010 with completion by fall.

Seattle voters passed the Parks and Green Spaces Levy by 59 percent vote in November 2008. The new $146 million levy provides acquisition funding for new neighborhood parks and green spaces and development funding for projects such as improved playfields, reservoir lid parks, renovated playgrounds, community gardens, and safety upgrades at city owned cultural facilities.

Local coalition to sponsor prevention events with Red Ribbon Week

The Southwest Healthy Youth Partnership will kick-off Red Ribbon Week on Oct. 23 through 31 by highlighting its year-round prevention efforts at various events, according to Renae Gaines, coordinator of the program.

Madison Middle School students and staff will wear and display red ribbons to demonstrate their commitment to be alcohol and substance free.

Gaines said in an email that the Red Ribbon Celebration acts as a catalyst to establish public and private partnerships for year-round tobacco, alcohol and other drug prevention.

“The Red Ribbon empowers us to take action in our neighborhood and schools and develop an attitude of intolerance to youth alcohol and substance abuse,” according to the release from Gaines.

The Red Ribbon Celebration was developed in response to the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena, who was brutally murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico in 1985. What began as a Red Ribbon Campaign to commemorate his death has developed into a year-round celebration to highlight positive actions taken by state, county and local agencies, departments and organizations.
