Molly Moon truck arrives in Ballard for the final leg of its contest

Molly Moon’s ice cream truck, "Leo", arrived in Ballard yesterday, handing out free ice cream scoops to kids, and starting the last keg of the contest.

Last November Molly Moon Neitzel announced that she plans to expand her Seattle ice cream empire by opening a third shop in the summer of 2011. Unsure of what Seattle neighborhood to call home, Neitzel will parked “Leo”, the Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream Truck, in three new Seattle neighborhoods to see where business is best.

Wallingford and Capitol Hill already have a permanent shop and for the last two months Leo was stationed in Madrona and Queen Anne.

Leo arrived in Ballard yesterday and will be parked on N.W. 70th St. between Mary Ave N.W. and Alonzo Ave N.W. until they find a semi-permanent parking lot to park in.

Ice cream lovers can help bring Molly Moon’s third shop to Ballard not only by visiting Leo this month, but also by “liking” the official Bring Molly Moon’s to Ballard Facebook page.

Taproot Theatre kicks off its 35th anniversary season with Greek classic

By Melanie Coleman, UW News Lab Student

Taproot Theatre is kicking off its 35th anniversary season with Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, and the excitement among the cast and crew is palpable.

“Everybody is really into this and has really risen to the challenge of doing this, too, which is just great,” said Mark Chamberlin, who leads the cast as Odysseus. “That’s the best kind of company to be in.”

Beginning Feb. 2, audience members will journey through ancient Greek mythology as Odysseus struggles to return home, an adventure full of action, heartache and sorrow that lasts 20 years.

Opening their milestone season with this epic poem was no coincidence, according to Taproot Theatre co-founder and director of The Odyssey, Scott Nolte.

“For a theater to survive 35 years is a bit of an odyssey, as well as an amazing challenge,” he said. “This signals that we’re here, we’re serious. Odysseus’ journey includes a lot of peril, a lot of missteps and a lot of victory, and that’s just the life of any organization.”

Police Blotter: Man stabbed near Ballard High School; jogger assault update

The Seattle Police Department reports that on Tuesday evening around 11:30 p.m, North Precinct officers responded to Ballard Swedish Hospital on a report of a stabbing victim that had just walked into the Emergency Room.

The 23 year old male victim said he had been in a car with a group of friends when he had an encounter with the driver of another car near N.W. 65th Street and 15th Avenue N.W. The car the victim was riding in was stopped and another car pulled up next to it. The victim, seated in the backseat, rolled down the window, as did the driver of the other car. They began yelling at each other and both men got out of their cars. The victim and the suspect began fighting in the street and then both got back into their cars.

Once in the car, the victim realized that he had been stabbed and was driven to Ballard Swedish Hospital. The victim was later transported to Harborview Medical Center for his injuries.

SLIDESHOW: Chief Sealth girls fall to Bainbridge 74-49

The Chief Sealth girls basketball team had a rough go of it against the Bainbridge Spartans at home and the results were not what they were looking for. It wasn't for their lack of hustle, they gave it what they could. Their energy level was high, fighting for rebounds, moving on defense but their shots and free throws just weren't dropping. The advantage the Spartans had was getting inside for easy shots close to the basket due against the Seahawk defense.

Just before the first half ended Sealth coach Maris was given a technical foul. (see photo in slideshow) The referee claimed she was yelling at him but in fact she was yelling at her player to get the shot off before the clock ran out. It was just one of those nights.

The Spartans would add to their lead by outscoring the Seahawks by an average of over 6 points a quarter. The leading scorers for the Seahawks were Justine Decker with 13 points and Victoria Elleby added 11.

Taking a look at the history of public safety in West Seattle

Editor's note: The West Seattle Herald has been covering news here for nearly a century. Robinson Newspapers (who run the West Seattle Herald) have a massive news archive of Herald coverage dating back to 1928. What follows are crime reports and public safety issues from 1928. Although reporters’ names were not included with stories at that time, their original words remain intact. As more historical crime reports are compiled there will be more installments of West Seattle All Time Crimes.

Geo. Ryan Back From Big Trip
Rough Roads Disabled Car and Hurt Mrs. Ryan

“A good time was had by all – with some qualifications,” declares George Ryan, genial Commercial Club secretary who returned last Thursday from a three weeks’ auto trip to Cripple Creek, Colorado with Mrs. Ryan and their two children.

While the party had a generally enjoyable time, they struck some roads that were so rough they disabled the car and blackened Mrs. Ryan’s eyes and cut her head when she struck the roof of the car.

West Seattle High School names outstanding volunteer Christy Rowe as 2011 Community Partner

Press Release:

Christy Rowe is one of those parents you always wanted in your school. She started volunteering in the Seattle Public Schools even before her first child walked through the door, and she’s still at it as her last child is about to graduate from college. If one of her schools needed volunteers, she was there.

If it needed money, she raised it. Last year, as President of the West Seattle High School Foundation, she welcomed attendees to the auction at which the first Community Partner Awards were presented. This year, the school honors her.

West Seattle High School Community Partner Awards are presented to individuals and groups in recognition of their generous sharing of their time, talent and treasure with West Seattle High School. Christy was a natural choice. A West Seattle graduate herself, married to another, her commitment to the school has already won her a Washington State PTSA Golden Acorn Award. In 2002, she was part of the team that brought a PTSA to West Seattle in the first place, after many years in which the school had only a Parent Group to support it. She then co-created the first West Seattle High School PTSA Auction.
