Pet of the Week: Biscuit is an empathetic alpha male

Biscuit is a 9 year old Yorkshire Terrier who, according to owner Lew, Judy and Rachel Townsend was conceived on 9/11. "We weren't there, but the breeder was," said Lew. Biscuits father is from Nanaimo in British Columbia, Canada and his mother is from Seattle. Sybil Evans was the co-breeder from Issaquah.

The Townsends shop for Biscuit's food at either Next to Nature in the junction or Pet Elements south of the Morgan Street Junction and they get him Natural Choice Duck and Potato, small bites. He enjoys Buddy Biscuits for treats.

Most small dogs are unaware of their own size of course and Biscuit is no exception. "He's an Alpha Male," Lew said, "He's all muscle and tendon." That in conjunction with good hearing make him a good guard dog.

He has an outsized personality too but he's modest about it and seems to take everything in stride. Even the range of outfits the family has found for him including a genuine Mexican sombrero, a hunting outfit, a leopard print bow in his hair and for an obvious reason, a ruffled dress. Why obvious? "Because it's adorable on him and the girl's outfits are cuter than the boy's outfits," said Judy.

Seattle Lutheran repeats as State 2B baseball champs

Coach Meehan reflects on the 'magical' run

Seattle Lutheran’s Saints brought home the 2B boys baseball trophy on Saturday, May 28 with a 7-1 victory over Warden at Parker Field in Yakima.

Updates were tweeted by Seattle Lutheran throughout the championship game and told the story of a Saint squad that went up 2-0 in the first inning and never looked back.

Seattle Lutheran pulled away from Warden in the top of the sixth, driving in three runs and putting the tally at 6-1.

One more run in the seventh and the Saints emerged victorious, 7-1.

Reflections on a record-tying accomplishment
Saint’s coach Steve Meehan and his team are undoubtedly still running high off their championship win on May 28. Taking the trophy this year ties Seattle Lutheran with DeSales out of Walla Walla as the only 2B teams to win back-to-back championships.

And as good sport stories go, the Saints had to get through DeSales’ storied squad (their coach Kim Cox has 500 career wins and was recently inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame) in the semifinal to get a crack at the championship. They ended up beating DeSales 12-7.

Custom cake bakery "BAKED" opens at Admiral Junction

The West Seattle custom cake bakery, "BAKED." opens Wednesday, June 1, at 2604 California Avenue SW at Heavenly Pasty & Cake's current location. The two bakeries will share the space, Allison Barnes of Heavenly Pastry told the West Seattle Herald. This storefront space is the former West Seattle Herald headquarters. We joined our Burien office at 14006 1st Avenue South.

Kristina Serfass and Natalie Vorpahl co-own BAKED. Serfass graduated from the Art Institute of Houston with a culinary arts degree. Vorpahl graduated from the Seattle Culinary Academy. They have both been in the cake business for five years, and have been business partners for three. Serfass lives in West Seattle, Vorpahl in Queen Anne. Their former location was on 36th Ave. SW.

"It's funny, said Serfass. "We have probably nothing in common but cakes and food."

"We just joke about it all the time," added Vorpahl.

"I like to go camping," said Serfass. "Natalie likes to go shopping."

"I'm not much of the, 'Oh, let's go out and go for a hike' type," Vorpahl added.

Yet walk into their space, and they do seem very much in sync with all things cake-related.

Volunteers needed this Saturday 9am – 11am to assist mural painting of Boren School

Press release from Delridge District Council:

For those of you that drive down Delridge you are aware that the Seattle School District boarded up the Boren School building earlier this year. This has led to several incidents of tagging of the building. In an effort to cut down on this acitivity 40 murals have been painted to attach to the windows of the building.

We need some volunteers to come out this Saturday morning from 9 – 11 am to help finish the project. We need to paint the backs and the sides of the murals to help increase their longevity. If you have two hours to spare on Saturday your help with this community project would be appreciated.

If you want to participate or would like more informaiton please contact me or just show up at the Boren School site at 9 am on Saturday, June 4th.

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone that you think might be interested in helping with this commmunity project.
