SLIDESHOW: Chief Sealth slaughters Tyee 59-13

By Kyle Howard

The Chief Sealth Seahawks and the Tyee Totems kicked off their season at six o’clock Friday night in front of a good sized crowd at Chief Sealth High School. Right from the start of the game was all Seahawks.

Senior Pepe Hernandez wasted no time getting the crowd and team pumped up with a dunk early in the first quarter. The Seahawks were very aggressive putting on a full court press and then trapping at half court, leading to 10 steals and plenty of fast break points in just the first quarter alone. It took Tyee just over three minutes to score their first point from a free throw, putting the score at 16-1. The Totems weren’t handling the ball well and were taking some off balanced and forced shots causing several air balls.

By time the quarter ended Chief Sealth led 38-3 with 10 steals, as Tyee had 13 turnovers.

The game slowed down a lot in the second quarter. The Seahawks starters didn’t play the rest of the game after about two minutes into the quarter. Neither team scored in the first four and a half minutes until Sealth forward Aaron Knox got an easy layup.

Take Two #8: Tech on the Brain

Hello everyone! I’m writing to all of you from the land of cold and snow that is the US Mountain Time Zone. It’s stunningly beautiful, but traipsing over porches of ice and wet in an open-toed walking boot has been a…shall we say interesting experience? Sadly, it doesn’t matter how thick your socks are in the end.

Beyond an alien environment, I also find myself typing on unfamiliar keys. Earlier this week my dilapidated laptop finally died. Already missing the “M” key and with the casing bent at an odd angle in the lower left hand corner, I knew it was only a matter of time. One moment I was happily traipsing through the twists and turns of cyberspace, and the next I was faced with the black screen of death and despair. No amount of pleading, desperate hand gestures, finger wiggling or even actual troubleshooting could revive my brain dead friend. There was only one thing left to do: declare a DNR and pull the plug.

SLIDESHOW: Sealth experience and depth mean a win over Tyee Nov. 28 in Girls Basketball

Chief Sealth had just too much depth and experience in a 78-38 non league girls basketball win at Tyee on Monday, November 28.

"We did well for what we had," stated Totem head coach Wayne Severson. "They played hard. Three of our players had never played varsity before. They just haven't had the experience at the varsity level.."
Academic ineligibility has the Tyee roster at seven players until the first Wednesday in December. Sealth suited up 12 players for this game.

"We're looking to finish near the middle of the pack (in the Seamount League)," concluded Severson.
Seamount first team All-Star Areneasha Smith scored 31 points but Emily Maiyo and Kimberly Holguin were the only other point scorers for Tyee. Maiyo had six points and 11 rebounds.

Monica Ouk, Khalyn Guy, Madison Kelly and Savannah Sheriff rounded out the hard fighting, but thin in numbers player roster for the Totems.

Smith's six points had Tyee within 10-6 before the Seahawks led 14-6 after one quarter. Chief Sealth gradually enlarged its margin to lead 28-14 at the half.

Seacrest Park food concession may change; Alki Crab and Fish has filed a formal letter of protest

Marination, food truck operator has been chosen by Department of Parks and Recreation

The food concession at Seacrest Park, 1660 Harbor Ave. s.w. has been handled by Alki Crab and Fish for the past seven years. But now Seattle Parks, which owns the land, has, after a review of a request for proposals determined that Marination Mobile has been awarded the lease. Owned by Roz Edison and Kamala Saxton the company maintains a mobile food truck that is in a different location every day. They visit West Seattle on Saturdays parking at 35th and Graham Street.

Alki Crab and Fish, owned by Eric Galanti and his father Rick, also owners of the Admiral Pub have filed a formal letter of protest with the Seattle City Council.

Since the space is also occupied by sub lessor Alki Kayak this has implications for owner Greg Whittaker and staff too and he's joined the Galanti's letter.

If Marination is successful in its bid they will transition into the space between April and June of next year.
