Pet of the Week: Sadie is a miracle dog

Jeanne Read is now the caretaker for Sadie but Sadie has been through some changes in her time and is still doing well. In fact Jeanne and her son Jim describe her path as miraculous.

Sadie, who is a "part hound dog, part German Shepherd, part Beagle," once lived on a ranch out in Enumclaw and is now 21 years old. Until two years ago she lived with a woman who later had to move to an apartment that didn't allow pets so she asked Jim to take care of her..but there's more that story.

Presentation on “Hidden Treasures in Washington’s Museums” to spark community conversation on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2 p.m.

The Highline Historical Society and Humanities Washington partner to bring author/radio producer Harriet Baskas to highline for free speakers bureau event

Press release:

The Highline Historical Society and Humanities Washington invite the community to an engaging conversation with Harriet Baskas, a member of the 2012-14 Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau.

This free event takes place Sunday, November 18, 2 PM at Highline School District ERAC (administration building), 15675 Ambaum Boulevard SW, Burien.

About this program
Space restrictions allow most museums to display only about 10 percent of their holdings. However, there are also surprising political, philosophical, artistic, environmental and historic reasons why museums keep objects from view.

Journalist Harriet Baskas will present a fast-paced, photo-filled and, at times, somewhat offbeat tour of Washington history through the stories of museum artifacts that are rarely – or never – shown to the public. Examples include Bing Crosby’s toupees in Spokane, a quilt made of Ku Klux Klan robes in Yakima and Native American spirit boards in Tacoma.

We will explore how these objects came to be in the local collections and who makes decisions about what is displayed or kept from view.

UPDATE 3: Gas line break causes traffic and Metro delays

UPDATE 6:53pm

Metro confirms that bus routes are back to normal now.

"The earlier blockage at California Av SW and SW Brace Point Dr in the Arbor Heights neighborhood has been cleared.

RapidRide C Line & Sound Transit Rt 560 resume their regular routing along SW Barton St"

UPDATE 6:10pm
The gas line break on California Ave SW happened according to SDOT officials on the scene because crews were using a concrete saw to cut through a damaged road panel in preparation for repaving set to start in a few weeks. In the process they "cut through a shallow gas line," a spokesperson said.

Puget Sound Energy sub contractor InfraSource responded to the break by excavating the spot near the break but said that the repair would take more time and extend well into the evening since it required going under the existing road bed. The road surface would then be covered until paving could be completed.

OutWest Bar patrons & revelers at Westin celebrate Ref-74's projected victory for marriage-equality

This story originally appeared in our sister newspaper, The West Seattle Herald

Washington State, with Referendum-74, is projected to join Maine and Maryland in allowing same-sex couples to wed via public vote.

Because of our mail-in voting system, Washington's final tally won't be official for the next few days. It was leading 51.8 percent to 48.2 percent in the final hours of Nov. 6. late Election Night.

It seemed like well over two thousand supporters of the referendum, and of President Obama, packed four floors of the Westin Hotel election night in downtown Seattle, if cheers, hugs, t-shirts, and poster-toting revelers were an accurate indication.

Closer to home, the OutWest Bar, which calls itself "West Seattle’s only Neighborhood LGBTQA Bar", at 5401 California Ave. SW, hosted a well-attended Referendum-74 party election night.

Boyfriends Daryl Dukes and Dave Kern live on the Burien, West Seattle border and attended the party. They are regulars at OutWest. While not sure if they will marry, they now have a choice.

Dow Constantine, Joe McDermott, Joe Fitzgibbon, others weigh in after election

Annexation being rejected, Marijuana decriminalization and same sex marriage being approved in projected returns

The Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle held election night parties on four floors. Perhaps over two thousand revelers supporting the reelected president and Referendum-74 for marriage equality attended.

Highline Times asked area politicians and others at the Westin parties to comment on the results, and projected results, of the races:

King County Executive Dow Constantine

""They've just called Colorado for Barack Obama. We're starting to see the numbers really rack up for the president now. What you're seeing here is a cementing of the shift that happened four years ago in American politics. The nation is becoming somewhat more urban. The old right-wing Republican line, people just aren't buying it anymore. The Democratic party has moved to the center and started to really articulate how it can move this country forward in the 21st century. People have gravitated to that message. People are not going to follow the Republicans over that cliff that the Tea Party is trying to take us over unless they rethink their message.

Meander's West Seattle location closing today; White Center location will carry on

Meanders Kitchen, the funky and fun restaurant that developed an almost cult like following for its home style cooking is closing its West Seattle location at 6032 California Ave.

Owner Miranda Krone and her associates recently opened a new Meanders in White Center on 16th SW in the former location of Papa's Pub.

But the energy required to maintain both locations proved to be too much as Krone stated on the restaurant's Facebook page:

"Though we'd wanted to keep the West Seattle shop open through December, it's become pretty darned clear that we need to focus our resources on the White Center shop. This past weekend was an amazing turnout; much more than we had thought, so our kitchen got backed up pretty significantly. In order to bring our best to you in the new space, we'll be closing the West Seattle shop this week.

So, tomorrow will be our last day in West Seattle. Ed's on the grill today, and I'll be cooking tomorrow. Come say howdy...I'll miss the West Seattle shop dearly, but I hope to see you all in White Center!"
