Rams fall at Todd Beamer

By Gerardo Bolong
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

FEDERAL WAY - Mount Rainier fought hard before falling in three sets at Todd Beamer in SPSL 4A non league girls volleyball on Tues., Sept. 23.
"The girls played well," Beamer coach Patrick Taitano said. "They really passed well the first couple of sets and the young players did well. Overall, it was a nice effort. We're still grooming the players for positions. Milholland played well."

Like the steady torrents of rain outside, the Todd Beamer Titans fired continual point volleys at the Mount Rainier Rams in the first set.
Against the tough Titan middle blockers, the Ram passing fell short of the net after many receives of service were either incomplete or mishandled. Depth of serve kept MR on its heels as Beamer swept to a 25-8 first set win.

The Psychic View – The Prophet of Gloom

by Marjorie Young

Though delighting in my psychic gifts, they come, as do all good things, with a down side; mainly when clients, or more surprisingly, friends, assume my lightest utterance may carry a cryptic or foreboding portent. I privately refer to this as the ‘Wizard of Oz’ syndrome.

Those close to me are well-aware that I am able to largely ‘turn on’ and ‘turn off’ my clairvoyance at will, though this required years of practice. Previous to that, I had been constantly inundated with unwanted ‘data’ regarding whoever happened to be around me at the time. Nowadays, during a consultation, I connect with the unnamed ‘source’ of information, and afterwards, successfully tune it out. Moreover, I never do sessions for those I know well, since I’d lack the necessary detachment to interpret whatever ‘tidings’ I receive with clarity.

Our reporter on the Maven Mars Mission: The Martian atmosphere is being studied

By Tim Clifford

On Sep.21 the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) space craft successfully inserted itself into Mars’s orbit to begin collecting data. During the NASA Social event the 25 participants from around the U.S. Including me, Tim Clifford, were given a tour of the Laboratory for Atmospheric Space and Physics (LASP) in Boulder on the University of Colorado campus and the Lockheed Martin Facility in Littleton, Colorado.

During the day NASA scientists and engineers discussed space science, Mars, manned and unmanned space travel and the future of the space race. Here is some of the most exciting information gathered while attending the NASA social event:

• MAVEN was launched in November of 2013, in a very specific launch window as Mars had approached an optimal position in the solar system for MAVEN to insert itself into its orbit 10 months later, on Sep. 21 this year. The trajectory of the space craft made it so that Mars was literally coming up behind it and after a 35 minute rocket burn it was “caught” in the orbit of Mars.

Ballard Crime Watch: Moloch riots through residence and cig-pigs take bins and bins

Man enters apartment using previous owner's keys, takes game

On September 12 at the 8700 block of Mary Avenue Northwest Seattle Police responded to a burglary at a residence. The complainant told officers that after leaving his home for a few days he returned to find his front door doorknob loose, however the door was still locked. He noticed that there was grass and dirt on his carpet and told officers that he does not leave his home in that condition. His Playstation3 was taken along with the controller and a few games. He said the estimated loss was $500. A neighbor told officers that a black man in his 20’s was observed near the residence and walked away when the neighbor approached her unit. She said that the suspect had been seen before and used to visit a female tenant that used to live at the location. Officers checked for latent prints, but were unable to recover any. Officers speculate the suspect has a key to the unit.

Neighborhood asks green developer to ‘Think outside of the box’

The 21st Avenue Northwest neighborhood is the site of another contentious housing disagreement in Ballard. The neighborhood is faced with what they call a “box” style, modern design home replacing a shabby, modified Tudor-inspired house that resembles many of the houses in the neighborhood. The developer, Green Canopy, contends they are designing with the future in mind.

Green Canopy Homes – a south Seattle based company that uses green materials, recycles/reuses, and rebuilds old homes with energy efficient components – has purchased the home residing at 6530 21st Ave. N.W.

At Large in Ballard: Dusk to Dawn Love Letter to Ballard

by Peggy Sturdivant

After attending the opening of the Nordic Heritage Museum’s new photography exhibit “The Color of Time,” with Ballard as its subject, I was torn about how to do it justice. “Are you going to write about it?” neighbor and original NHM member James Hafterson called out to me after the event, “because I think it’s the best exhibit I’ve ever seen there.”

For the last four years Tod Gangler has been walking through the streets of Ballard at night, a neighborhood he thought that he already knew, using tri-color photography and a color carbon printing process that returns to the origins of photography circa late 1800s France. Like Daguerre in his day Gangler photographs with long exposures, as long as an hour at a time, for each of three separate black-and-white photographs which he later prints through a process that takes eight days (after having a single negative made in Portland).

Kitchen fire in Magnolia; mother treated for smoke inhalation

At approximately 11:30 a.m. Seattle Fire Department dispatched 22 units to a house fire at 2609 36th Ave. W. in Magnolia.

According to SFD, while cooking on the kitchen stove on the main level of the home, the resident thought she had turned the stove off and left the room. By the time she returned there was a stovetop fire.

She quickly evacuated her infant child and returned to the fire with extinguishers. By that time the fire had spread to the cabinets in the kitchen. She was able to extinguish the flames and the fire department was called to secure the area.

In the process of fighting off the fire the resident suffered smoke inhalation and was urged by SFD to seek medical attention. Her husband brought her to Swedish Hospital.

Kyle Moore, spokes person for the Seattle Fire Department, reported that fire from unattended food on the stove is the number one reason SFD is dispatched, and 22 units is not uncommon for house fires.

“22 units is pretty typical for a house fire that’s a full response, and we can always turn them around if we don’t need them,” said Moore.

Moore estimated the damage cause by the fire is less than $50,000.

Sustainable Ballard celebrates 11 years of sustainability with its annual festival

Over 75 exhibits, plus food, beer and live entertainment

On Sunday, September 28, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Ballard Commons Park (5501 22nd Ave NW), Sustainable Ballard will be celebrating their 11th annual Sustainable Ballard Festival.

This year’s festival offers 75 exhibits under this year’s “Reuse and Recycling” theme.

Jenny Heins, organizer and president of Sustainable Ballard said this year is sure to bring people out “in droves.”

“Our attendance is really dependent on the weather - but our attendees continue to show up in droves and be enthusiastic learners. We try to bring people new information every year and though we have businesses exhibiting at the festival - we are all there to educate in a fun and inspiring way. Who wouldn't come back for that?” said Heins.

According to Heins, Sustainable Ballard Festival is an opportunity for people to learn together, get inspired and discover new ways to live more lightly on the earth. The festival is a reminder and celebration of simple sustainability practices citizens can use everyday to influence consumption.
