Lancers rally for Oberto win

Seamount League 3A Kennedy Catholic overcame an accumulation of mistakes and bad choices to surge past South Puget Sound League 4A Emerald Ridge, 49-45, in Sat., Dec. 26, girls basketball action of the 2014 Oberto Christmas Classic held at the Kennedy campus.

"I just told the players to be more aggressive," said Lancer coach Greg Caldwell. "In the beginning, they just settled and didn't feel the urgency."

Kennedy Catholic's rally to victory seemed unlikely after Emerald Ridge had posted three consecutive points to lead 42-36 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

As urgency appeared, Kelsey Abrejera fired in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to ignite a final charge. Following an Anna Tefelberg defensive rebound, Ariell Garnett spun for a lay up that had the Lancers within 42-41 as 2:14 showed.

First half mistakes kept John F. Kennedy Catholic scrambling back in a 76-71 overtime boys basketball loss to Auburn Mountainview in the boys section of the 2014 Oberto Christmas Classic held at Kennedy High School on Sat., Dec. 26.

"We didn't play well in the first half," said a disappointed Lancer coach Don Hoffman
Three lead changes in the first half preceded AJ McGrew's two free throws that positioned Kennedy Catholic into a 69-68 lead with 2:29 remaining in the five-minute overtime.

Four seconds later, Elijah Johnson was fouled in back court and proceeded to convert two free throws for the Lions.

With 1:48 showing on the clock, Keannu Royster broke free for an Auburn Mountainview layup after the Lancers missed an inside shot. But 72 seconds later, Parker Diller gave Kennedy Catholic new life with a breakaway basket that drew Kennedy within 72-71.

However, the Lions buckled down to close strongly with 4 of 4 charity tosses down the final seconds to claim victory against the Lancers, who had problems scoring regularly from the perimeter during the entire game.

Just libel laws

By Meghan Sheldrake

One of the most important issues in the food industry today is the use of libel law in that sector, hence “veggie” libel laws.  Companies are unconstitutionally suppressing legitimate critics of their business practices and in the process costing innocent people money, as well as endangering public health.  Libel laws should not be used to protect food industries from critics.

Fiend breaks while residents on holiday vacation

On Dec. 6 Seattle police officers responded to a burglary at a residence located on the 8300 block of 29th Avenue Northwest. A house sitter told police that when he came to check on the house he noticed that the glass insert in the front door had been blasted through. Police believe that was the point of entry because the deadbolt on the door was still locked. Police were able to contact the owner of the home. The home was in disarray and since the owner was out of town they have no idea what the suspect took. They dusted for fingerprints but none were recovered.

Knife and mask robbery
At 6:20 p.m. on Dec.22 police responded to an armed robbery call at a grocery store on the 8600 block of 9 Ave. S.W. The victim, a 52-year-old clerk, reported that the suspect had robbed her at knife point while wearing a Halloween mask.

According to the victim the masked suspect held what appeared to be a paring knife only an inch or two away from her stomach while whispering threats and demanding cash. The victim informed officers that she believes the suspect is a frequent customer since she recognized his thick Latin accent. Once the suspect had gotten the money he walked away southbound on 9th.

The victim provided dispatchers with a description of the suspect’s clothing and height (a surprisingly short 5’2) which lead officers to detain a potential suspect. The potential suspect was wearing similar clothing, was a similar height and weight, and was Hispanic. When the victim was brought to the scene to provide identification she informed officers that they had the wrong man. As of this writing the suspect remains at large.

West Seattle burglars arrested; Diamond ring recovered

Three men broke into a West Seattle home on Sunday and while the owner hid in a closet, stole a diamond ring. But they didn't get away with it.

The victim said that she heard voices outside the front door of her home in the 6000 block of 26th Avenue SW around noon and could partially see people through her blinds. Fearing the worst she hid in a closet and then
heard glass breaking and people moving around in her house.

The victim then called 911 to report the burglary.

When police arrived they saw two men running out the front gate of the home and a third suspect, who acted as a lookout during the burglary, still on the stairs. Police were able to capture all three men.

One of them dropped a diamond ring just before he was detained. The victim later identified it as her ring. She also identified two small containers of marijuana the suspects stole. All three men were booked into King County Jail.

Robber caught in Delridge by K9 dog

A 25-year-old armed robber who broke into a car in the Delridge neighborhood on Sunday, and then threatened a mother and daughter returning to their vehicle was tracked down by a police dog K9 unit and arrested.

The victims of the break in had parked their car in the 8100 block of 20th Avenue Southwest, and told police that when they came back about 6 PM Sunday they found a man inside.

He emerged with stolen goods confronting them and showed them what they believed to be a holstered gun and said “I’ll shoot you if you follow me.” He then fled on foot.

The victims contacted 911 and a K9 officer arrived and was shortly able to track down the robber, who had hidden behind a bush a few houses away.

He was still in possession of the victims’ stolen goods, as well as property from another car prowl. The suspect also had an outstanding felony warrant. He was booked into King County Jail on robbery charges, as well as a warrant.
