Kitchen Talk: Tomato or Tomahto!

by Chef Jeremy McLachlan

Whether you are green, pear, grape or big fat and juicy, I have some tricks for you! This month we are all about the tomahto, the British accent makes me sound more respectable and sophisticated — kinda like when Giada over pronounces her Italian words! This summer is shaping up to be the best growing season ever for tomatoes, and now the question arises on what to do with them after they are ripe for the pickin'. In this blog I give you my three biggest tips on how to handle the tomatoes.

Good for you- Joyce Entus; Hostess of Heaven

By Kathryn Kingen

It is not often in life that we come across a real live angel. We had one from the day we opened our doors at Salty's on Alki in West Seattle. You may have met her, her name is Joyce Entus, and she was the beautiful, unforgettable, vivacious greeter who rolled out the red carpet for the guests who graced our door. I would like to tell you about her.

Joyce had a very accomplished life as a woman in business. In the mid 1960s she managed the waterfront icon of West Seattle, the Beach Broiler Restaurant. By the mid '70s she owned it. She worked "eight days a week, 25 hours a day," and loved every minute. Guests came from all over the world to enjoy her food and view, including the great pianist Liberace and famed opera singer Rolf Bjorling.

Night Out gatherings will focus on neighborhood awareness Aug. 4

The national “Night Out” Crime Prevention event gets underway on the evening of Aug 4 and is always popular in West Seattle.

It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite our communities. It is a great chance to learn about crime prevention, while also celebrating your community and spending time with your neighbors.

Night Out in Seattle
Seattle has had a long history of supporting Night Out. The program has been growing every year, with over 1,400 neighborhoods participating each year. This type of community participation is what makes Seattle a great place to live.

The event is a unique opportunity to bring your neighbors together, welcome new neighbors, talk about crime prevention and Block Watch efforts, and mainly just have a great time with food, music, games - whatever you want. The creativity we've seen of what neighborhoods come up with is amazing. Some gatherings are just a few households; others expand into large block parties.
