Sewer pipe back up shuts down Luna Park Cafe

A sewage pipe passing under the parking lot of the Luna Park Cafe on Avalon Way SW backed up in the early morning on Tuesday Aug. 25 causing the cafe to shut down as repairs were being made. Work being done near the West Seattle Bridge may have been a contributing factor.

The line is not connected to the cafe.

The backup caused sewage to spill into the parking lot and out to the sidewalk.

Crews were called in to clean up the mess and get the line flushed out.

Cafe management said they hoped to resolve the problem and be open as soon as possible

Pat's View: In Dreams

By Pat Cashman

“Dreams are the touchstones of our characters.” David Thoreau, seminal figure in the history of American thought.

“I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the U.S.

“I dreamed I showed up for my SAT’s in the nude.” D.W. Clark, a guy I know who showed up for his SAT’s in the nude while wide awake.

Maybe you’ve never had my nightmare. It’s probably necessary to have once been a radio DJ---but here’s the bad dream: The song you are playing is coming to an end, and you suddenly realize you don’t have another tune cued up. Not only that, but you can’t even think of anything to say. There are no commercials to play, no news to read---as the song fades and there is nothing but dead air. Then I wake up, sweating.

It turns out, as I talk to others from the radio trade, the dream is a typical one---although it not so common among talk show hosts---who don’t usually play music and could never imagine themselves with nothing to say.

Police blotter week of 8-24-15

By Tim Clifford

Sucker punched in Roxhill Park
Police received a call just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 15 from Roxhill Park concerning a man who was assaulted, robbed and left unconscious in the bushes. Officers responded to the 9400 block of 30 Ave. S.W. just as medics were beginning to examine the victim. The victim was very lethargic and gathering the details leading up to his assault was a timely process.

On Aug. 14 the victim had gone to Key Bank and withdrawn over a thousand dollars from two tellers. He then went outside and withdrew an additional $200 from the ATM. The victim explained that his rent was due this week and he was trying to gather the $1500 he needed before the end of the weekend. The next day he went to a Bank of America ATM and attempted to withdraw another $200 but was declined since his account was overdrawn.

Star Wars and rediscovering the familiar

By Amanda Knox

When I think about watching Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, I remember cuddling up with my mom and sister in Mom’s big (or so it seemed at the time) bed after popping the VHS into the built-in slot of a chunky, 32” TV perched on her dresser. Warm in our fleece pajamas, we passed between us a freshly microwaved bag of extra-butter popcorn and endlessly sucked on our salty, oil-stained fingertips. After the previews, a conspiratory hush settled, and I tempered my giddy anticipation in order to dutifully recite the opening crawl, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...”
