Get to know more about Springer the Orca in a virtual meeting July 30

The Whale Trail is hosting a very special virtual event on July 30 featuring the Orca Springer whose story is worth telling.

Springer (A73) is an orphaned orca who was spotted near Seattle in January 2002—lost, alone, and 300 miles away from home. Six months later she was rescued, rehabilitated, and returned to her pod. Today she is thriving, tending her two calves. It's the first—and so far only—successful orca rehabilitation and reunion in history.

Cast of characters run for Governor

By Jean Godden

If you were writing a zany musical comedy, you could scarcely do better than the cast of characters running in this state's August 4 primary election. The official Voter's Pamphlet features 17 pages of gubernatorial candidates.

Facing off against Jay Inslee, the two-term incumbent governor, admired nationally for his pandemic response, are 30 men and two women most of whom had to pay $1,821.79 (that's 1 percent of the governor's annual salary) to compete.

LETTER: Fourth of July fire victim offers thanks to the community; GoFundMe has raised nearly $6000

The fire that destroyed the apartments at 7100 Calfornia Ave. SW on the fourth of July (see our coverage here) truly disrupted the lives of those who lived there. Two of the victims Floreen Nair and her son Nathan lost nearly everything from clothes, to her computer, to household items, to her precious family photograhs. Nair who is from Fiji has been through tough times before and told Westside Seattle that she was just getting back on her feet again when the fire struck. Westside Seattle reached out and helped her set up a GoFundMe page which to date has raised $5,895. If you'd like to help her too, use that link or donate to Floreen Nair at the Bank of America in the West Seattle Junction. Here is her letter.

Test of Emergency Alert system on the West Seattle Bridge set for Saturday July 25

information from the Seattle Fire Department

by David Cuerpo

On July 25 at 12 p.m., the City of Seattle Office of Emergency Management will send a test message through the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system. The alert will only be sent to those who have opted in to receive local test messages through WEA and to a small geographic area under and near the West Seattle Bridge. The message will state: “This is a test of Wireless Emergency Alerts by the City of Seattle. No action is required.”

The national WEA system is an essential part of the City’s emergency preparedness and response. This public safety system allows customers who own compatible devices to receive geographically targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats to safety in their area. The most common example of these alerts is the “Amber Alerts” sent by Washington State Patrol that directly ping mobile phones.

Bee's Plumbing and Heating taking over Tug Inn location; They plan to keep things buzzing

Bee's plumbing and heating, in business here since January of 2017, was looking for a permanent headquarters and when the Tug Inn at 2216 SW Orchard St showed up in listings, owner Ben and Meliss Bandel were overjoyed. It's a central location in West Seattle and by working with an adjacent property owner they acquired the space and took over just last week. The former owners of the Tug were out of state and in their 70's but it was being run by their nephew who told the Bandel's that he'd like to see it come back at some point in the future if a suitable location can be found.

In the meantime, Bee's has taken over the property and is using the former bar as a warehouse for plumbing parts. The Bandel's have plans over the next two to three years to replace it with a 3 story building that will house their entire operation.

Alki Lumber and Jim Sweeney's vision for the future will be made real

When complete the 492 unit mixed use project will include hardware, restaurants and other retail

West Seattle's Alki Lumber is heading for a complete metamorphosis. A fixture since it was founded in 1921 by the grandfather of the late Jim Sweeney, it has stood for generations as the kind of place you could always find what you were looking for and someone to help you find it. That spirit was practically fused into the walls of the iconic store by Sweeney, creating a special kind of loyalty. His passing in 2012 was marked by many tributes, including a small flag plaza just outside the store at 4440 Fauntleroy Way SW.

But while he was a businessman, he was also a visionary and saw the future of the land in the "Triangle" as something that would eventually be developed. Now his family will making his vision real.

SW Precinct boarded up as a precaution against protestors; Chief Best sends letter detailing loss of non lethal tools

Carmen Best, Chief of Police sent out a letter to businesses, Seattle City Council and the community in light of potential protests that are thought to be staged this weekend. As part of the preparations she outlines, all precincts are being boarded up. A crew from Herzog Glass was busy adding plywood to all lower windows at the SW Precinct exterior on Friday. This is a purely precautionary measure and in response to what Chief Best characterizes as being denied the use of even non-lethal tools to "safely intercede to preserve property in the midst of a large violent crowd."

Her letter states:

Dear Business Owner and/or Resident:

Please know that the Seattle Police Department is committed to addressing life safety incidents and calls for service, and responding to ongoing demonstrations and unrest in the city.
