OP-ED - North Highline Sub Area plan won't benefit White Center; Displacement is almost a certainty based on methodology

Gentrification is defined by Oxford as "The process whereby the character of a poor, urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing, and attracting new businesses, typically displacing current inhabitants in the process".

Anti-displacement is a collection of ideas and strategies developed to mitigate the effects of the aforementioned ‘g-word’. Here, in North Highline, we may never see the outcomes of either. 

All this is part of King County's North Highline Sub Area plan.

Patrick's Bakery and Cafe break in is another in a series in White Center

The break ins that have plagued White Center in recent months continued on Wednesday morning when Patrick's Bakery and Cafe located at 15th SW and 100th SW was broken into around 6 am.

The video surveillance footage showed a white male of heavy build, rummaging through the interior of the business. Owner Patrick Choy said "He broke through my bakery window in back and took several knives to help him try to get cash drawer open. He managed to totally destroy my cash register and knives. He left out the back door with nothing. I called the police and they did file a report and took extensive finger prints. I’m lucky this time as my place was not destroyed except for the cash register."

Potential plan for Junction parking lot development detailed

West Seattle Junction Association and Community Roots Housing explained their shared vision; Not a certainty since the future lies in the hands of the landowners

The West Seattle Junction parking lots that since the 1950's have provided easy access for patrons of the area are headed for development. The questions of what and when remain open.

An online meeting presented by the West Seattle Junction Association (WSJA) and Community Roots Housing  (CRH) on Oct. 21 presented a much  more detailed look at the plans the two organizations have developed, to construct a mix of affordable housing, retail, and community enhancements. 

Led by Executive Director of the WSJA Lora Radford, the meeting began with a brief history.

The Three 9 Lounge will bring Polynesia to "West Seattle island"

The closure of the West Seattle Bridge brought to mind the feeling of being on an island in West Seattle, Now that identity is being celebrated  in a way.

Opening at the West Seattle Bowl on Oct. 28 is the new Three 9 Lounge, a Polynesian themed tiki bar with food, drinks and tons of atmosphere to match. They are located at 4505 39th Ave SW.

General Manager Jeff Swanson explained, "The space was doing ok as the High Strike lounge, and we are keeping that menu, but it was being under utilized, so we were talking and our friend Joe Jeannot, who is a restaurant consultant and ran the Beer Festival in years past suggested we should change to a tiki bar. After about a day or two of thinking about it we all said, 'Let's do it.!"

White Center Public Safety meeting covers lots of ground; County will fund overtime for more patrols

  An online Public Safety meeting on Tuesday, Oct 19 focused on White Center crime, fires and economic revitalization. The meeting was in part a response to a Move.org petition that was published on behalf of the White Center business community which has suffered in the wake of a series of fires, five since July 5, and crimes ranging from vandalism, to break-ins, to violent assaults

Community Roots Housing proposes redevelopment plans for West Seattle parking lots

Community Roots Housing, in partnership with the West Seattle Junction Association (WSJA), is proposing plans for a redevelopment of four parking lots in West Seattle.

On October 21, the organizations will host a virtual community meeting to gather input on the proposal. 

The redevelopment plans would convert the four parking lots into affordable housing, including one building for senior housing, a 6,500 square-foot business incubator space, and replacement public parking. The housing would service incomes at or below 60% of the area median income.

Northwest Maritime Center receives gifts of more than $2 Million from the McCaw Family and the Bezos Family Foundation

Gifts support the Maritime High School, campus expansion of the Northwest Maritime Center, and will support Maritime youth programming opportunities

Northwest Maritime Center announces two major gifts from notable families and foundations in Washington state in support of education: The McCaw Family (Bruce, Craig, John and Mary Kay) and the Bezos Family Foundation. Collectively, the McCaw Family gift is $2 million, and the Bezos Family Foundation gift is $750,000. 

The support and gifts provide a solid foothold towards the Northwest Maritime Center’s aggressive campaign goals to launch Maritime High School in Seattle (a $7.5 million startup campaign), provide inspirational maritime youth programs on the waters of Puget Sound (a $6.5 million program engagement campaign), and expand the footprint of Northwest Maritime campus in Port Townsend, WA ($4.6 million capital campaign).

Online meeting set for Nov. 4 on 8 story, 87 unit apartment bldg. proposed for Avalon Way

An online meeting is set for Nov. 4 at 7pm to learn more about the 8 story, 87 apartment building proposed for 3010 Avalon Way SW. The project will have parking for four cars. It was under Administrative Review as Westside Seattle reported in August.
