Concrete truck on the West Seattle bridge, but only for the overpass

An alert West Seattleite, Chris Ann West spotted a concrete truck on the West Seattle Bridge but only technically. The truck from Jireh Construction was there to pour cement for the footings on the pedestrian overpass that crosses the roadway leading to the bridge itself.

That project, involving a nearly total renovation of the structure has been underway for some time and since it has been closed will now enable people to cross over and get from the top of the hill down to Avalon Way SW.

This was taking place as the concrete truck drivers strike by Teamsters Local 174 was continuing though some movement by the drivers themselves had been announced on Monday. The drivers said they would be willing to work for three of the Seattle area concrete companies, specifically, Lehigh, Cadman, and Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel.

Concrete drivers from Lehigh will report for work tomorrow

In an apparent breakthrough toward the end of the 117 day old concrete truck driver's strike, drivers from Lehigh Hanson Cement Company were told to report for work on Wednesday, March 16. That means projects that have been on hold during the strike will finally get back underway. it's not clear at this point which jobs will take priority.

The Seattle Department of Transportation in a statement said:

"The City’s contract language for public works projects like the West Seattle Bridge gives contractors autonomy to select concrete suppliers. Kraemer North America has flexibility to get concrete from any supplier, and is currently reaching out to all three companies listed in the Teamster’s press release."

Teamster's Local 174, representing the 330 concrete truck drivers, offered on Tuesday to return to work for a select group of companies as contract negotiations were still being worked out.

Concrete truck drivers, Teamsters Local 174 offer to return to work at select companies

Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel, Cadman Seattle, and Lehigh Cement are on their list; Merlino, Cal/Portland, and Stoneway are not

The concrete driver's strike now in its116th day saw some movement today from the union, representing the 330 drivers. Teamsters Local 174 offered to return to work at four select concrete companies in the Seattle area including Cadman Seattle, Lehigh Cement, and Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel.

What effect will this have on stalled projects like the West Seattle Bridge?

They said in a post on their website today that:

"This decision will allow some concrete to flow to critical projects in and around Seattle, with a dedicated and professional Teamster workforce operating equipment they know well, including the West Seattle Bridge, Sound Transit, the Convention Center, and the Hwy 520 Bridge."

They said that negotiations for a new contract would continue until agreement was reached, including the three companies whose workers have offered to return to the job.

Also in their post they stated:
