WestSide Baby celebrates 25 years with return of "Stuff the Bus" community campaign

As summer continues, WestSide Baby has announced the return of its signature community campaign, Stuff the Bus, aimed at providing essential items for local children. Now in its 25th year of service, the organization is calling on the community to help ensure every child in Western Washington has the basics they need to grow and thrive.

The campaign, which runs through August 31, 2026, addresses a critical gap in support. When school is out, families often lose access to vital resources like free meals and school-based connections, yet the need for basics remains. As WestSide Baby notes, "Diaper need doesn't take a summer break".

West Seattle wins another in victory over South Hill of Puyallup

West Seattle is alive and well in the loser's bracket of the state age 9-11 Little League all-star softball tournament in Gig Harbor after shutting out South Hill of Puyallup in a 9-0 game Wednesday.

The Westsiders now face Issaquah in a 6 p.m. Thursday game.

West Seattle entered the tournament as the District 7 champions.

It dealt Evergreen a 15-0 defeat Monday after opening with a 3-1 loss to Magnolia/Northeast Seattle on Sunday.

OP ED- Port of Seattle is removing valuable trees from Mathison Park in Burien

Note: For many years Eric Mathison was the Editor of the Highline Times. His family donated their property in Burien to the city which opened Mathison Park on Sept.15, 2006

The Port of Seattle has announced its plans for the destruction of several majestic native Douglas Firs at Mathison Park.

They plan to destroy the trees between fall and the end of the year. That is a 6-month reprieve from their original plan to cut them last Spring without citizen or city council comment.

This is part of their Flight Corridor Management Program although Mathison Park is not in Sea-Tac’s flight path, at least not yet. Residents along the Sound in Des Moines, Normandy Park and Burien should expect planes to start taking a shortcut over their homes toward the runways as part of the Port’s attempt to serve as many new passengers as if they were building a fourth runway.

West Seattle Majors ousted by Lake Stevens

West Seattle's stay in Walla Walla for the state Majors age 10-12 Little League all-star baseball tournament ended with an 8-2 loss to Lake Stevens on Tuesday.

The Westsiders came into the tournament as the District 7 champions while Lake Stevens won the District 1 championship for the area north of Seattle.

West Seattle finished with a record of 2-2 in state tournament action.

Fairmount Playground transformation underway: Construction begins on new synthetic turf infield

Construction has officially begun at Fairmount Playground, marking a major milestone in the $1.5 million project to modernize the local athletic field. Located at 5400 Fauntleroy Way SW, the site is currently closed to the public as crews work to convert the traditionally mud-prone dirt softball infield into a high-performance synthetic turf surface.

Current Status: Construction in Full Swing

As of July 2026, the project has transitioned from the design and permitting phase into active construction. Neighbors will notice significant activity this summer, including the demolition of the old dirt infield, site grading, and the installation of essential drainage systems.

South Seattle College and The Mars Society sign 10-year agreement to build Moon and Mars Analog Research Station in the Pacific Northwest  
Partnership envisions creating a regional aerospace workforce, research, and education platform timed to NASA's Artemis program and Project Ignition Moon Base initiative.  

South Seattle College (SSC) and The Mars Society, through its Seattle chapter, have signed a 10-year Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) establishing a multi-program partnership to build a Moon and Mars analog research station on the South Seattle College campus in West Seattle and create a regional education and workforce pathway for the next generation of aerospace researchers, technicians and engineers.  

The agreement, signed by SSC President Monica Brown and Mars Society Executive Director James L. Burk, covers four interconnected efforts: a Moon and Mars analog research station on the SSC campus, a joint space studies curriculum and stackable certificate pathway, a student capstone project and internship program tied to industry partners, and a regional workforce pipeline and community engagement effort.

West Seattle neighbors to 'Quake, Rattle & Roll' in major disaster readiness exercise at Morgan Junction Park

People in West Seattle are preparing to head to Morgan Junction Park next month for a massive community coordination exercise designed to test the city’s resilience. On Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the "Quake, Rattle & Roll!" event will bring together over 400 community members to practice the essential skills needed to support one another following a major earthquake.

The West Seattle activation, located at 6401 California Ave SW, is one of four hub locations across the city participating in this large-scale annual exercise. Other participating neighborhoods include Roosevelt, Madison Valley, and Rainier Beach. You can view a full map of the locations here.

Tropical Summer Celebration: The Kenney to host public "Paradise Party" on August 20

The Kenney Senior Living is opening its doors to the Morgan Junction community for an evening of tropical flair and festive fun. The Paradise Party, a free event open to the public of all ages, is set to take place on Thursday, August 20th, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

The celebration will be held on the Grand Lawn & Garden, conveniently located at the corner of SW Myrtle St and 47th Ave SW. According to the sources, the event is designed to bring a "taste of paradise" to the neighborhood, allowing guests to celebrate the warmth and beauty of summer through music, laughter, and connection.
