The Space Age gas station located at 7850 35th Ave SW at SW Holden St is undergoing a significant transformation, permanently enclosing its former three-bay auto repair garage to construct an expanded, full-service convenience store and mini-mart.

Current Remodel & What to Expect

While construction on the store building is actively progressing, the station’s six fueling pumps are already fully operational. Major electrical and pump infrastructure upgrades were completed in spring 2026, allowing regulars to purchase regular and diesel fuel while building work continues.

Crews are actively framing out the former garage doors and prepping the building envelope for retail. Before the store can officially open, Space Age Fuel must complete interior tenant improvements—including plumbing, commercial refrigeration, and counter installations—and secure final building inspections from the City of Seattle alongside prepared food and beverage permits from King County Public Health.

An official opening date has not yet been announced.

Once complete, customers can expect a modernized retail experience designed in partnership with King Retail Solutions (KRS). The new layout in line with the company's other remodels will likely feature:

• Store Design: High-efficiency LED lighting, wood-grain accent paneling, bold architectural signage, updated storefront glass, and branded red, blue, and yellow exterior fascia paneling.
• Beverage Hubs: A branded "Coffee Planet" bean-to-cup coffee program, multi-valve fountain soda and frozen slushie stations, and large walk-in cold vaults stocked with local craft brews, energy drinks, juices, and teas.
• Hot & Fresh Food: Self-serve hot display cases featuring breakfast sandwiches, burritos, crispitos, roller grill items (hot dogs, specialty sausages, taquitos), and a self-serve Bob Evans biscuits-and-gravy dispenser.
• Cold Grab-and-Go & Bakery: Fresh daily giant donuts and pastries alongside pre-packaged sandwiches, wraps, salads, fruit cups, and parfaits.

A 55-Year Neighborhood History

The current project marks a major transition for a site that operated as a local landmark for over five decades. The location originally opened in 1969 as Hegge Chevron, founded by Ted and Sharon Hegge. Following Ted's passing in 1989, Sharon and her son Mark continued to operate the station and auto repair garage for decades.

After Sharon passed away in 2023, the Hegge family placed the property up for sale. The transaction closed in August 2024, ending 55 years of family ownership and transferring the site to Space Age Fuel, an Oregon-based, family-owned regional chain.
