Botched burglary of marijuana grow-op
Police responded to a burglary in progress call to an apartment complex on the 4200 block of SW Hill St. on Nov. 30. The apartment manager told police he noticed the door was wide open and attempted to call the tenant (no luck). He heard loud banging noises, went up to the unit and yelled “What’s going on?!” Two black males emerged, one holding “what appeared to be a handgun covered in black canvas” and they both ran southbound before another witness saw them jump into an older model vehicle with a tan top. Officers noticed the strong smell of marijuana outside the apartment and found two separate “small” growing operations inside. Later, the victim told police his “ex-girlfriend” is probably behind the burglary.
No way are you getting my iPhone
A man was sitting in the back of the bus listening to music on his iPhone as the bus pulled into the Olson-Myers Park and Ride on Dec. 2. As riders started getting off the bus a man approached the iPod-listening victim, pulled up the hem of his sweatshirt to display a handgun and demanded his electronics. Two females joined in and attempted to steal the iPod from his hands. The victim flat out refused to give it up and the suspects jumped off the bus. The bus was not equipped with cameras, but the driver remembered one of the females asking, “Does this bus go to Top Hat?”
Delridge convenient store robbed
On Dec. 2 around 10 p.m. a Delridge convenience store near the library was robbed. The owner told police a juvenile black male he often sees in the store came in and looked at the refrigerated beverages before leaving without buying anything. The young male came back soon after, grabbed a soda and started watching the front door. Suddenly a white male wearing a white plastic mask walked in, pulled out a black revolver and demanded cash. The victim gave him money from the cash register. While the robbery was happening the other male swapped out his soda for a bottle of “Cisco” alcohol and both men ran out of the store together. The soda bottle and mask (discarded in the street out front) were collected as evidence.
Cereal and some jewelry
A burglar who broke into a 20th Ave S.W. home during the day on Dec. 1 helped him/herself to a bowl of cereal with milk before stealing three diamond-encrusted gold rings. Nothing else was touched and the home was not ransacked, leading the responding officer to suggest the burglar was likely someone close to the family.
Stealing from the deceased
A woman called police to report her husband had recently passed away and someone was stealing items from his S. Sullivan St. apartment (they did not live together). Neighbors told the widow a man claiming to be her husband’s long time friend had gained access to the apartment. She said it appeared jewelry was stolen and it he had attempted to steal the deceased man’s vehicle. The victim said she knew the man and he “believes he should get all of (her husband’s) belongings."
