If you have fruit trees or vines you have until tomorrow, Saturday, August 1, to register for the first of two scheduled West Seattle Community Gleaning Days.

This community initiative is a collaborative effort between the Rotary Club of West Seattle and Scouting America Chief Seattle Council, designed to harvest ripe fruit that might otherwise go to waste. Volunteers will visit registered properties to pick apples, grapes, pears, plums, and quince, transporting the fresh produce directly to the West Seattle Food Bank and the White Center Food Bank.

The urgency of the August 1 deadline is underscored by the impact of previous efforts; last year, the program successfully collected nearly 900 pounds of fruit with the coordination of City Fruit. Organizers emphasize that "every piece of fruit can make a difference" to neighbors in need of better nutrition.

• September 13 Gleaning: Registration is open until September 1.
