Keeping the estate tax is a better idea

Let's get the real story behind Initiative 920 (proposing to abolish the Washington State estate tax). People need to understand what's really going on here.

As a Certified Financial Planner practitioner serving high net worth and institutional investors in Washington State, I am probably more familiar with the estate tax (or "legacy tax") and related planning strategies than the average citizen. Clients I serve, along with other millionaire Washingtonians, are potentially subject to our Washington State estate tax.

Getting our priorities straight

The Seattle City Council should feel a moral obligation to "just say no" to the Sonics request to remodel Key Arena. Maintaining our public spaces (parks, schools, community centers, roads, etc.) are necessary investments in our infrastructure, but extending what amounts to a subsidy for a team of millionaires is not a critical need - that's why I was pleased to see your recent editorial, "Sonic the tax-hog" (April 26. 2006)

Budgets at each level of government are moral documents. They identify our collective priorities and reveal the values we hold about our community.

Ballard Avenue record holder

Bop Street isn't so much a store as it is an experience. Of course, you would not know it from the store's non-descript exterior. Located in Cowman Campbell Paint Company's former warehouse, a simple sign above the door and sandwich board on the street corner are the only evidence of its existence.

As you enter you see one thing, records. Bins, shelves, and boxes bulge with thousands upon thousands of records, ranging from the rare to the commonplace to the bizarre. Bop Street is well-known for the quality and quantity of its inventory.

Federal Way centenarian credits hard work, family for her longevity

"A life of hard work," is Dorothy Owen's explanation for her longevity.

Born May 25, 1906 in Boone, Iowa, Owen keeps busy these days tidying up her small garden surrounding her home in the Belmor complex in Federal Way and visiting with her son and grandsons.

On May 25, Owen plans to celebrate her century of life in the Northwest with a family dinner at Black Angus Restaurant.

A slight tremble in her hands and high blood pressure are her only health concerns - and she definitely needs to wear her hearing aid, she says.
