Annexation worries skeptic

The City of Burien has spent an enormous amount of time and resources on the annexation issue and its alternative options. Some of the incentives of this action, according to the city, are increased real estate and added police and fire department coverage.

As a hopeless skeptic, I wonder if there would be a benefit of additional property to Burien. Many annexations of the past have resulted in net negative cost to cities.

Immigration view backed

Thanks to Ralph Nichols for a very accurate picture of our illegal immigration problem. If our legislators ignore the problem, Washington will follow California with a bankrupt medical system, exorbitant social service debt, etc.

Hard-working citizens are paying dearly for an unearned and undeserved (welfare) lifestyle for illegal immigrants. Property taxes are skyrocketing and forcing many elderly out of their homes, without a decent and safe retirement alternative.

Our sleepy bedroom communities, once neat and well-maintained, have become ill-kept and deteriorating.

At The Admiral - 'Cars' shows Pixar's creativity

Pixar weaves its animated magic by finding little corners of the known world - a child's room or a coral reef - and in "Alice in Wonderland" fashion turning them on their heads. The toys walk, the fish talk and, with a bickering assault on common sense normally reserved for humans, propel us down a rabbit-hole of comic misadventure.

In "Cars", Pixar takes its formula into that modern cathedral of the automobile: The NASCAR track and its anthropomorphic tendencies to another level.

Hudsons celebrate 50 years together

Ken and Shirley Hudson will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 1, 2006.

Shirley was 16 years old the first time she saw Ken at a party and kept asking the host to announce a "ladies choice" so that she could ask him to dance. When it finally came up he accepted and the romance began.

They lived in Vancouver B.C. at the time and dated steadily until 1952 when Ken's family made the big move to West Seattle.

Jerry's View - Foiling woodpeckers

Ten years ago our neighbor remodeled her home and used a new and popular stucco system for most of her homes siding. The attractive finish was not only attractive to the eye it became attractive to woodpeckers for some strange reason and they began poking holes the size of tennis balls on many of the surfaces.

She tried everything short of rifle fire to discourage the pesky birds.

She was told by so called experts that it only happened in the springtime and only by females.

Trainer's Corner - Drink lots of water, vary walks and runs

Become inspired by adjusting the scenery and locations of your walks and runs. Instead of doing the same neighborhood route every single day, surround yourself with beautiful views and less pavement by checking out a different park in Seattle. Take out your calendar and mark one park to visit each week. Ask a friend or your family to go with. Here is a list of my favorites:

1) Lincoln Park

2) Alki Park

3) Magnuson Park

4) Burke-Gilman Trail at UW

5) Burke-Gilman Trail at Gasworks

Lazy Gardener - What to put on hot south wall

August is a good month for nursery visits - whether you are preparing a new garden or renovating an existing one. Nurseries begin to reduce inventory in August as they prepare for the new year.

You'll find lots of sales to move plants that have been around since spring. In addition to the benefit of reduced cost, potted plants are now large and filling their containers - unlike new spring transplants. So, get out there and support the industry.

Q: I have a hot south-facing wall where I'd like to put a climber.
