HB 1420

Modifying provisions on primary election ballots.

By a vote of 97 to 0 on Feb. 28, 2007, the House approved HB 1420, which would allow primary ballots to be counted even if the voter failed to declare a political party preference. A political party affiliation would be inferred and the vote would count only if the voter voted for candidates of one political party. Currently, if a voter fails to choose a party affiliation, but continues to vote, the votes for partisan offices are not counted.

Clarification

Some important distinctions were left out of an article in the Feb. 21 edition about the city's proposed changes to multifamily development zones.

The proposed increase in height limits would be 5 feet, not 10.

The city proposes increasing the height limit from 25 to 30 feet in zones designated lowrise/duplex, lowrise 1 and lowrise 2.

The city recommends increasing the height limit from 30 to 35 feet in lowrise 3 zones.

The height limit in lowrise 4 zones would drop from 37 to 35 feet.

Snipping and snapping

On 46th SW, neighbors called 911 when a fire broke out in the porch laundry room of a nearby home. (Fire investigators found an exploded aerosol can inside the dryer as well as a burnt towel on the kitchen stove.) The older woman who lives there had just been outside in her bathrobe clipping bushes - and also clipping a neighbor's phone line with the shears. (Later that day, a second neighbor discovered his phones lines had been cut, and a third found his TV cable sliced through.) She couldn't remember her own name and didn't know what had happened.

Swimsuit designer Heidi Fish shows off her wares

There's always a hubbub, among men at least, with the annual publication of Sports Illustrated magazine's swimsuit edition, and this year, West Seattle swimwear designer Heidi Fish has a couple of her swimsuits in there - pages 196 and 200.

Two of Fish's swimsuits are featured on model Julie Henderson in separate poses with the marching bands of the University of Southern California and Grambling State University in Louisiana.

Ideas With Attitude - Marking your territory

Once I wanted to join the local garden club and was asked for my resume. I sent in a five-page list of my educational background and accomplishments and soon received a letter stating that I was accepted into membership.

But first the president asked me one question. "Why didn't you mention anything about gardening?" I answered with complete honesty. "I have never gardened in my life and would like to learn more about it. That's why I want to join your club."

Talk about self-disclosure and you only have to look at what I downloaded from a forwarded e-mail recently.

My West Seattle

My transportation dream

By Marc Calhoun

In the Feb. 28 Herald I wrote of a walk I took after a bad commute; a walk to shake off the frustration of a slow drive home in gridlock traffic. The Ghost of Times Present went with me on that walk, but I had to shoo him away. I needed an escape. So I let the Ghost of Simpler Times Past take my mind off things for a while. Reality eventually called and, as I returned home, the Ghost of Times Future decided to perk me up. He prodded me to write up one vision of what things might be like in our city in 10 years.

At The Admiral - Craig may save Bond saga

Scientists speculate that the long-term memory of goldfish is 30 seconds. As a species they would make a perfect fan-base for the 007 movie franchise.

Your average Bond movie neither requires nor rewards the ability to track the extended sweep of its narrative. Is James fighting terrorists or corrupt financiers? Does the end of the movie make much sense out of its beginning? Do you really care?
