Des Moines Space heater causes fire, smoke harm to apartment

May 1--Firefighters quickly put out an early evening apartment fire at 22405 30th Ave. S. However, smoke damage left the apartment uninhabitable.

The Red Cross assisted the occupant with temporary housing.

Fire investigators determined the cause was a space heater placed too close to the wall, which caught on fire.

There were no working smoke detectors in the apartment.

No other apartments were damaged and there were no injuries.

Mount Rainier enjoys banner year in baseball

Kyle Johnson did it with the bat and the ball in helping lead the Mount Rainier Rams to a 3A West Central District playoff win over Olympic, 5-4, at the Des Moines Fieldhouse Tuesday, May 8.

"The varsity experience is not there from last season, only three regulars," said Darren Rawie, head baseball coach of the traditionally strong Rams program.

That's just to say the Rams lose a lot off a championship caliber team last season and all they did is bring up junior varsity and subs of last season. They unload and reload.

Banners over Fauntleroy

(On) May 3 there was a five-car rear-end accident on the Eastbound lanes of Fauntleroy Way. One person was taken to the hospital with possible face and neck injuries, four others had to deal with the trauma and inconvenience that accompanies most auto accidents.

Unfortunately, this is an all-to-common occurence on this route.

What made this accident unique was the possible cause of the impact. At the time, there were several people on the pedestrian overpass with a "Bring the troops home NOW" banner.

Driving license for biking?

Concerning the subject editorial, May 9.

It has been my understanding for a number of years that if I, as a bicycle rider, were ever stopped by a policeman, I had better be able to show my driver's license.

As a fitness bicyclist, not a bicycle commuter, I avoid streets as much as possible in favor of bicycle paths, but I always carry my driver's license when "driving" my bicycle.
