Kennedy Catholic wins shoot out

SUMNER - John F. Kennedy Catholic addressed Woodrow Wilson with a spot in the 2012 Class 3A state tournament on the line and ended any debate about who should move on.

Exercising remarkable resilience and patience under fire, the South Puget Sound and Seamount No. 4 seed Kennedy Catholic Lancers forced the Narrows League champion and No. 1 seeded Wilson Rams through the regulation 90 minutes, a pair of five-minute overtimes and a penalty-kick shoot out before escaping with a 3-2 win in the West Central /Southwest Bi-district tournament held at Sunset Chev Stadium on the campus of Sumner High School on Saturday, Nov.3.

Kennedy's Lancers moved on to a host match up to be played Nov. 7 at Highline Memorial Stadium. Wilson's first league championship season in 30 years ended in Sumner.

Kennedy Catholic penalty kick shooter Mary Witkowski opened up by neatly depositing the first kick into the upper left corner of the net ahead of teammate Madeline Dailey's low kick that shot into net off the left post. With Wilson's corresponding two shooters coming up empty on their attempts, the Lancers had the Rams on the ropes immediately.

SLIDESHOW: Kennedy Catholic holds off Mountlake Terrace

Opportunistic offense and defense carried Kennedy Catholic to a decisive first half lead before the Lancers had to hold off a second half comeback in a 35-29 Class 3A quad-district football playoff win against Mountlake Terrace on the Highline Memorial Stadium turf Saturday, Nov.3.

Kennedy (9-1) next plays the Columbia River Chieftains of Vancouver Saturday. Mountlake Terrace finished at 5-5.

"The good parts are that we're still alive and we'll get better," a somewhat disappointed head coach Bob Bourgette said.

The improvements coach Bourgette referred to comprised the sometimes leaky faucet second half defense that allowed Mountlake Terrace to mount comebacks that kept the visiting Hawks in contention.

Kennedy scored just enough to keep Mountlake Terrace off its back when opportunities to snuff the Hawks were present.

Leading 21-3, the Lancers began giving up big chunks of yardage. The Hawks came out of halftime with great motivation and switched emphasis from the run to the pass. Mountlake Terrace quarterback Beau Kennedy passed on six of the Hawks' first 12 plays of the second half with Shawn Enensen being the primary receiver.

Sealth Alum is the choreographer for CWU's The Tempest

Carly Squires Hutchison, a 2007 graduate of Chief Sealth High School is the choreographer for Central Washington University's Central Theatre Ensemble production of The Tempest, beginning November 8.

A senior in CWU's Bachelor of Fine Arts-Musical Theatre program, Hutchison has appeared in The Adventures of Sam Spade, A Christmas Carol, and Cherios. Prior to attending CWU, she performed at the Village Theatre, the Wooden O, and Seattle Contemporary Theatre.

In the presentation, a wizard's beautiful daughter, a long ago injustice, a malicious monster, a bevy of beautiful fairies, a couple of drunk beach bums, and a fateful shipwreck on a mysterious island all come together in Shakespeare's last and most haunting play. Known for its magic, comedy and exotic locale, it is ultimately a story about family and how we say good-bye to those we love.

Take Two #54: The Haunted House

Alas, the season of ghouls and ghosties is officially over. Halloween has passed. The Day of the Dead is now over too. All the masks are returning to their storage bins, and the haunted houses are efficiently dismantled. Pumpkins are replaced with turkeys, and lots of us are left with way too much candy – either collected or leftovers from the trick or treat candy bowl. In fact, economists are reporting that Halloween is effectively recession proof. Sales this year were better than ever, and based on these numbers no one would ever know we had a national unemployment rate of 7.9% (and that's better than it has been in a while).

According to Fox news, Halloween is actually a $6+ billion industry – second in holiday spending booms only to Christmas. Between the costumes, the candy, the parties and haunted everything amusements I definitely believe it. I even had the pleasure this Halloween season to be part of a haunted house and not just a customer. As always happens, being on the other side of the tape, so to speak, puts a whole new spin on my perceptions.

Evergreen girls out of volleyball district tournament with loss to Olympic

By Gerardo Bolong

Enthusiasm and effort fell short for the Evergreen High School girls volleyball team in a 3-0 Class 2A West Central District loss to Olympic on Friday, Nov. 2, in a loser-out battle at Franklin Pierce High School.

"Our team normally shows a lot of heart and a lot of fire," said Wolverine coach Bethany Tate. "Everybody needed to show up and be ready to play. We just could not show the fire for the entire match. Olympic also made less mistakes."

Evergreen began the first set as if mired in quicksand, showing an assortment of mistakes as Olympic drove its advantage to 10-2. The Wolverines from White Center were unable to string more than two points in a row while the Trojans maintained the lead.

Keeping their spirits up, the Wolverines managed to close within 15-9 before Olynpic used a service ace and several other big serves to hold a 19-9 margin.

Suddenly, Evergreen showcased the energy and fire that was lacking in the earlier part of the set.
