The Psychic View – Second Chances

By Marjorie Young

Not long ago, I heard an unforgettable true story. A Labrador puppy, born blind, was saved from euthanasia when a woman stepped forward to adopt her despite the ‘handicap.’ ‘Lady’ found a happy home with ‘Clare’, especially enjoying daily outings to a nearby, often deserted beach. On these occasions, the dog observed caution, staying by her companion’s side. But one day, a few years later, an extraordinary event occurred. Strolling together at the shore, Lady uncharacteristically ran off, racing ahead while steadfastly ignoring Clare’s commands to return. Bewildered, her owner gave chase, only to see Lady pause, listen intently, then plunge into the surf. Soon, the cause of the Lab’s atypical behavior became clear. A drowning woman was calling desperately for help…and only Lady could hear the call. When the victim, seeing the dog moving toward her, stopped crying out, Clare shouted instructions to continue, permitting Lady to at last locate her and bring her to safety. Thus, the blind Labrador, gifted with a second chance at life, returned the favor in the most meaningful way possible.

Pride-full weekend ahead and much more…

Drivers need to plan ahead to avoid traffic congestion

Pride events over the next three days are happening on Capitol Hill, in Downtown Seattle and at the Seattle Center. Additionally, at the Seattle Center, both the Seattle Storm and Seattle Reign are set to play, plus Cher brings her D 2 K Tour to the Key Arena. And if that’s not enough, the Seattle Seafair Pirates land on Alki Beach Saturday to mark the official start of Seattle Seafair while in the Greenwood District, car buffs can enjoy the ever-popular annual Greenwood Car Show. You’ll find details about these and other events below.

The Seattle Department of Transportation encourages motorists to consider joining the ranks striving to reduce air pollution by not driving alone and trying one of the many alternate forms of transportation available – Metro Transit, the Sounder, Link light rail, West Seattle Water Taxi, the Seattle Streetcar, the monorail, carpool, bicycle, or even walk - if feasible.

Can you think of a name for the two new water taxis?

With two new water taxis on the way to replace the aging (and frequently out of service) existing vessels) King County Ferry District is looking for help with names for the new boats. They will serve on the West Seattle and Vashon Island routes to downtown Seattle.

“This is a great opportunity to display your creativity and highlight your favorite part of our region,” said Joe McDermott who chairs the King County Ferry District. “Anyone can submit name suggestions, so spread the word to your kids, friends, families and neighbors!”

The naming contest is open and runs up through July 18.

Individuals can submit their ideas at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2JNBGG2 or by calling 206-477-3840. Suggestions will be taken until Friday, July 18, 2014. The King County Ferry District will then narrow the names down before putting the final public vote forward to the public at the end of July.

Arbor Heights edges Gregory Seahurst

By Ed Shepherd
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT

Even though Arbor Heights won a Seattle Summer Swim League dual meet opener at Gregory Seahurst by a 379-355 score Thursday, the words from winning coach Chris Veraya made one think there were two winners.
"Give a lot of credit to that guy right there, Mike Fosberg," said Veraya of his opposing coach. "They are making amazing gains. I'm a little scared for next year."

Until this year, Gregory Seahurst's team has lost to most SSSL teams by 100 points or more per dual meet, according to Veraya.

This meet was different, close throughout the 72 events.

The score was 99-96 Gregory Seahurst after 16 events.

It was 140-136 Arbor Heights after 40 events.

After 53 events, it was 265-264 Gregory Seahurst and 331-325 Gregory Seahurst after event 66.

A Visit with Kissin’ Cousins

By Georgie Bright Kunkel

The title brings up memories of the first time I ever heard of anyone using the term “Kissin’ Cousins.” I knew growing up that one was not supposed to marry close family members but I wasn’t really sure why. In prehistoric times I expect that people weren’t aware of the taboo of having sex with a cousin. It wasn’t until scientific research brought out that so-called in-breeding was a no-no that humans paired up with people outside their extended family. Even early tribal people picked partners from another tribe. There were various customs involving this practice. Most of the time the young bride would move to the village of her new husband where she was ruled by her husband’s mother.

But that’s another story.

Heeling in Time: Swiftsure a beacon in maritime history

Northwest Seaport, a maritime heritage organization, is restoring a 109–year-old Lightship (No. 83) called Swiftsure.

The Swiftsure is to become a floating museum, and in their effort to revive the ship, they hope to discover the rich, nuanced layers of history the ship contains and also share the lore of bygone days with the public by having them actively participate in the project. Swiftsure is open to the public and floats at the Historic Ships Wharf at Lake Union Park.

According to Nathaniel Howe, the Vessel Manager & Nautical Archeologist for Northwest Seaport, 179 lightships were built between 1820 and 1952, and of those, 17 remain, half of which have become floating museums.

Built in 1904, Swiftsure was first forged in the Carnegie steel furnaces in New Jersey. That same year, America gained control of the Panama Canal and engineers started the daunting challenge of opening the earth for naval passage. Indeed, the Swiftsure was fabricated from an era of unprecedented strides in engineering and industry.

District 7 All Star Little League tournament will see changes

By Tim Clinton
SPORTS EDITOR

Change is in the wind for three of the upcoming District 7 All-Star Little League tournaments.

One was rearranged after a team was added and two were dropped, one was switched around after a team was dropped and a third -- the Juniors age 13-14 tournament -- has been cancelled altogether.
Southwest of White Center dropped out of the age 9-10 tournament, leaving seven teams instead of a full field of the eight member charters.

West Seattle gets a first round bye as a result, waiting until 9 a.m. Sunday to play the winner of a 9 a.m. Saturday game between Rainier and Seattle Central.
South Highline American opens against Renton at 12 p.m. Saturday and South Highline National meets host PacWest of Burien at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The winners play each other at 12 p.m. Sunday.

The winner's bracket final awaits Sunday's winners at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with the loser's bracket final at 10 a.m. Friday, the championship at 10 a.m. Saturday and the if-necessary game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
